action

The two Spanish crooks Miguel and Tulio win a card by cheating in a game of dice that shows the way to Eldorado , the city of gold. On the run from the losers, they accidentally land up as stowaways on a ship of the unscrupulous conqueror Hernán Cortés , where they are discovered and imprisoned. Together with the horse Altivo, they manage to escape in a lifeboat. After reaching the New World through more luck than understanding , they follow the path that is marked on the map and arrive at the golden city, where they are received as gods. The cozy chief and the obsessed high priest Tzekel-Kan are both trying to win favor. For this purpose, the latter wants to offer them human sacrifices again and again , which they ultimately forbid him. The local Chel, with whom Tulio falls in love, helps him and Miguel to play the role of the gods convincingly, but she also quickly causes a falling out between the two friends. When Miguel injures himself slightly, the high priest realizes that the newcomers are not gods, since gods do not bleed according to his imagination. With the help of his magical abilities, he brings a huge stone statue to life and tries to kill the two Spaniards because they endanger his position of power. In the course of the fight, he fell into a raging underground stream, which carried him away and washed up again outside the city. Cortez and his men find him, and Tzekel-Kan, who sees the Conquistadores as the true, merciless, doom-bringing gods, promises to lead them to El Dorado. Miguel and Tulio help the residents to protect the city from the attackers by collapsing the only access, a tunnel. When Tzekel-Kan and Cortez's expedition reached the earlier entrance, they found it locked. The enraged conqueror leads his men on, convinced that he has fallen into a lie of the priest. Tulio, Miguel, Altivo and Chel, now also locked out, are on their way back to Spain.

criticism

Lexicon of international film : Drawn adventure film that tries its hand at “adult” animation. Quite entertaining and pointedly told, it ultimately follows all too familiar patterns of action to which he is unable to add new aspects using the art of drawing.

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
