Tyne and Wear [ ˈtaɪn ən ˈwɪə ] is one of the six metropolitan counties and is located in north-east England at the mouths of the rivers Tyne and Wear . It consists of the metropolitan boroughs of South Tyneside , North Tyneside , Newcastle upon Tyne , Gateshead and Sunderland . Tyne and Wear was formed in 1974 from parts of the adjacent counties of County Durham and Northumberland .

In 1986 the county council was abolished and its powers were transferred to the county's Metropolitan Boroughs. Tyne and Wear continues as a ceremonial county . The districts share responsibility for certain public service tasks, such as local public transport, fire services and cultural institutions. Police duties are performed by Northumbria Police , which is also responsible for Northumberland.

The county crosses the River Tyne, which was the traditional border between Northumberland and County Durham. Newcastle upon Tyne and North Tyneside are north of the river, Gateshead, Sunderland and South Tyneside south of it.
