action

The high school graduate Christine is madly in love with the French Alain, who is studying German in Lübeck . Christine's bitter father, the industrialist Luba, is against this connection. He lies and intrigues to prevent the two of them from dating. Nevertheless, Christine and Alain spend a lot of time together. You go to the Baltic Sea , visit the city or visit the old Jens Brodersen, who is said to have clairvoyant abilities . He predicts a long journey for the couple. Christine is more and more taken by the imperious nature of her father. To find out more about him and the parents' divorce, she visits her mother in Hamburg . But she doesn't want to know anything more about her former husband.

Since Alain has to return to France soon, the two plan that Christine should visit him during the holidays. Christine's aunt Karin appears surprisingly with her son Theo. After Karin's relationship with an Italian has failed, she asks her brother to stay with him for a while. Luba agrees, but blames her. Christine finds an understanding ally in her aunt, who suffers just as much from the tirades of her hard-hearted brother as she does. Meanwhile, there are increasing problems with the balance sheets of Luba's companies. An evening meal with Luba, Christine, Alain and Karin ends in an argument when the father forbids Christine's trip to France. After Alain has already left, Christine plans a secret date with the help of her aunt. Alain wants to pick up Christine in Lübeck without her father knowing anything about it. On a stormy rainy day, Christine, weakened by a cold, waits at the agreed location. Before Alain gets there, she collapses. In the hospital, her father and Karin report that she was saved by a strange young man and that Alain has since canceled his invitation. When Karin tries to reach Alain by phone, his mother asks not to call there anymore.

After being discharged from the hospital, Christine personally thanks her rescuer, the pilot Martin Täumer. When a letter is sent back to Alain unread, Christine finally realizes that her last hopes for a future together with the Frenchman were in vain. Instead, she feels more and more drawn to Martin. When Christine's father learns that Martin is the only son of a wealthy factory owner, Luba, who is in trouble, senses personal advantages. Unlike with Alain, he now promotes his daughter's relationship. He even travels to Martin's father to talk to him about a possible marriage of the two. During a party, Luba Martin shows his daughter a photo album. When Martin discovers photos of Alain in them, he is disturbed. Karin thinks Martin is jealous. She tells him about Alain and the secretly planned meeting through which she met Martin. Martin remembers that day: he had pushed a car off the rain-soaked lane, which then went up in flames. The young driver, Alain, died. In search of help, he finally met the collapsed Christine.

A conversation ensues between Martin and Luba, who persuaded his sister to keep Alain’s accidental death a secret from Christine. Luba, who sees his daughter's relationship and thus his business plans with Däumer in danger, asks Martin to forget about the accident. He is well aware of his guilt, but does not have the heart to file a voluntary report and speak to Christine. Luba firmly believes that there will be grass over the matter at some point. He also forces Karin to be silent. He claims to his daughter that Martin asked for her hand. When Luba tells a bank director that the two are getting married, he receives a much-needed loan. Meanwhile, Martin, shattered by guilt, calls the unsuspecting Christine one last time. He gets on a plane and commits suicide . When the authorities assume an accident, Luba continues to prevent his daughter from ever learning the truth at all costs.

History of origin

Background and script

The film producer Luggi Waldleitner had already brought three successful film adaptations based on novels by Johannes Mario Simmel to the cinemas in 1971/72 : And Jimmy went to the rainbow , love is just a word and the stuff dreams are made of . With its director Alfred Vohrer and screenwriter Manfred Purzer , Waldleitner planned, in addition to other Simmel films, also the filming of the novel Der Schneesturm (original title: Метель ) by the Russian writer Alexander Sergejewitsch Puschkin . The story set in 1811 was published in 1830 in the short stories The Tales of the Late Ivan Petrovich Belkin (original title: По́вести поко́йного Ива́на Петро́вича Бе́лкина ).

For the film adaptation, Waldleitner had the historical material about a farm daughter who falls in love with an ensign against her parents' wishes , relocated to modern times. The script, written by Manfred Purzer in collaboration with Michel Gast, still had the originally planned film title Black Rain . It was not inadvertently reminiscent of the plot of the American hit film Love Story (1970) or the narrative structure of Simmel's own films.

occupation

When it came to the cast, a number of actors who had already been in front of the camera in the Simmel films were used: Alain Noury , Malte Thorsten and Konrad Georg . The female lead was cast with the hitherto little known Anita Lochner , who turned out to be an excellent choice, as did her film parents Wolfgang Reichmann and Ruth Maria Kubitschek . Other roles included Eva Christian , Alf Marholm , Herta Worell , Hans Daniel and the popular actor Henry Vahl .

production

The Füchtingshof was one of the numerous locations in Lübeck .

Besides the lead Roxy Film by Luggi Waldleitner, the Paris- based Maya Films by producer Henry Lange was also involved in the production costs of the film. The film, whose French working title La pluie noire was based on the planned German title Schwarzer Regen , was not shown in France .

The shooting took place from August 16 to September 20, 1972, especially in Lübeck . Some recordings were also made in Munich , Hamburg and southern France. Günther Kob was responsible for the equipment . The costume designer was Irms Pauli . For the production line was Walter Tjaden responsible.

Eva Ebner , who, in addition to assistant director, also took on a small film role, suggested the film title And the Rain blurs every trace , which is reminiscent of And Jimmy went to the rainbow . This was very well received in the production, so that the title previously intended was replaced.

Film music

The soundtrack comes from Erich Ferstl . The title melody and the piece Alain et Christine appeared in 1972 on a single on the EMI Electrola label .

Reviews

This section consists only of a cunning collection of quotes from movie reviews. Instead, a summary of the reception of the film should be provided as continuous text, which can also include striking quotations, see also the explanations in the film format .

“Anyone who loves Lübeck will get their money's worth in this new Alfred Vohrer film. Seldom has one seen such appealing and atmospheric images of the old Hanseatic city in a film. Then it hardly matters that the film plot is constructed and thin-blooded. [...] The film shows the clear, beautiful face of Alain Noury and gives the young Anita Lockner [sic!] The opportunity to show talent. All the other actors remain superficial. This is less because of them than because of the script, and even the great Wolfgang Reichmann as a Lübeck merchant looks pale. "

“The material of this emotional and fateful story is taken from a novella from the 19th century. But the externally lacquered, internally completely unsatisfactory dramatic puss has absolutely nothing in common with the author Pushkin. "

"Poignant romance."

Awards

The German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) awarded the film in 1972 with the rating “valuable”.

In 1973 the film was shown at the 8th Moscow International Film Festival , where director Vohrer was nominated for the Golden Prize.

In the same year Und der Regen blurs every trace was shown at the International Film Festival of India in New Delhi .
