history

Thiersee was first mentioned in writing in 1224 and belonged to Bavaria until 1504.

During the War of the Spanish Succession , the place was badly damaged several times by looting and pillage between 1702 and 1704.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Thiersee was a rural community that was not open to traffic. A road from Kufstein to Thiersee was only built during the First World War . In the decades that followed, there was considerable construction activity in Thiersee, with a tendency towards urban sprawl.

Passion play

In 1799 the people of Thiersee vowed to perform the suffering and death of the Savior in front of the Margarethen Church three times a year during Lent in order to keep their valley from war. The first playhouse was built in the same year. Again and again authorities forbade the game, but the Thiersee faithfully adhered to their vows.

In 1926 a new playhouse was built that can accommodate 1,000 visitors. Today the Passion Play takes place every 6 years. The people of Thiersee do not see their game as cultivating customs, but as a living commitment to the Christian faith.

In 1999 the 200th anniversary of the Passion Play was celebrated. For this purpose, two outbuildings were added to the Passion Play House and the forecourt was redesigned.

Thiersee film history

Thiersee was the center of Austrian film production from 1946 to 1952. A total of 18 feature films were produced in the film studio during the period mentioned. The second Austrian post-war production "Wintermelodie" by producer and director Eduard Wieser premiered on August 14, 1947 in Vienna. The films shot in Thiersee also include “ Das doppelte Lottchen ”, “ Eroica ”, “ Blaubart ”, “Der Weibsteufel” and “Maria Chapdelaine”. French, English, German, Austrian and Swiss production companies were involved in the various films. Stars like Oskar Werner , Curd Jürgens , Attila Hörbiger , Paula Wessely , Hilde Krahl , Brigitte Horney and Hans Albers stood in front of the camera in Thiersee. In mid-1952 the film studio in Thiersee was given up by the ÖFA (Wienfilm) in favor of its Vienna studios. The Thierseer studio is still the only location-bound film studio in Tyrol.
