Geographical location

Winn is in the east of Penobscot County. In the west, the area of ​​the town is bounded by the Penobscot River , which flows south . history

The first settler to settle in the area was Joseph Snow in 1820. He settled on the banks of the Penobscot River, on the Old Military Road , which today runs parallel to US Highway 2 .

Originally, the River Township No. 4 "belonging to the Fourth Range" , Snowville named after Joseph Snow and later also Five Islands Plantation , until it was organized on April 8, 1857 as Town Winn . The town was named after John M. Winn, who bought the area in 1843. The town's first meeting took place in the Steamboat Company office . The East Winn area was settled around 1850. A sawmill, a grain mill and a shingle mill were built there. On the banks of the Penobscot River, Shaw Tilson & Co. , later Shaw Brothers , founded a tannery in 1863 . In its time it was the second largest tannery in the world. It comprised 365 tanner vats and was sold to Poor & Kingman Co. in 1867 . In 1892 the tannery burned down. The town experienced an economic boom through the tannery.
