The second season of X Factor Malta took place from October 6, 2019 to February 8, 2020 and was the Maltese preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam ( Netherlands ).
The winner was the singer Destiny Chukunyere , who won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest for Malta in 2015. Destiny's song, however, is selected internally by PBS and presented at a later date.
format
concept
As early as September 2019, PBS confirmed that there will be a second season of X Factor Malta. For a long time it was unclear whether the program would continue to serve as a preliminary decision for the song contest. Finally, PBS only confirmed on October 11, 2019 that the season would also serve as a preliminary decision for the ESC 2020. However, only the artist was determined via the program; PBS will select the contribution internally with the winner. So the concept remained the same as last year .
Overall, the program was to be divided into five rounds. First, the auditions took place, where previously selected participants presented themselves to the jury. These then decided whether the participant would reach the next round and thus the boot camp . In this, the singers were divided into four categories and were given a mentor who represented one of the jurors. In the boot camp, the participants then had to put their skills to the test in groups and perform certain songs. The judges then decided who would reach the next round. The remaining participants then reached the Six Chair Challenge . Here the participants had to fight for a place on six chairs per category. The next round was made for the six participants or places that the juror decided on. In Judges Houses , the jurors then selected their three protégés, who make it into the live shows. There the participants had to prove their skills again with mottos. In the five live shows, however, the audience then chose the winner of the second season of X Factor Malta. In addition to participating in the ESC, the winner also received a contract with Sony Music Italy .
jury
In September 2019, PBS confirmed that the judges are the same as in the previous edition. The jurors had the task of coaching the singers and supporting them as mentors. The following people were part of the jury:
- Howard Keith Debono
- Ray Mercieca
- Alexandra Alden
- Ira Losco
Moderation
Ben Camille, who hosted the first season, also hosted the second season of X Factor Malta.
Choice of contribution
As in the previous year, the Maltese contribution will again be selected internally by PBS. In the show itself, the performers sang covers, but presented their own contribution in the finale.
Preliminary rounds
The casting rounds were broadcast from October 6, 2019 to November 3, 2019. The participants selected by the jury there then reached the boot camp , which was broadcast on November 10, 2019 and November 17, 2019. This was followed by the Six Chair Challenge for the participants.
Six Chair Challenge
The Six Chair Challenge was broadcast from November 24, 2019 to December 15, 2019.
A total of six participants in each category achieved a place in the next round. These 24 participants were as follows:
- Boys: Matt Blxck, Kyle Cutajar, Dav. Jr, Giovanni, Karl Schembri, Jurgen Volkov
- Girls: Jasmine Abela, Gail Attard, Marija Bellia, Destiny Chukunyere, Karin Duff, Justine Shorfid
- Overs: Ed Abdilla, Celine Agius, Paul Anthony, Chantal Catania, Kersten Graham, Jozi
- Groups: Bloodline, Chord, FAITH, Reign, Sweet Chaos, Yazmin and James
Judges Houses
The remaining 24 participants now had to prove themselves to their mentors in the next round. They each sang a song and had to convince their mentors as well as their assistants. Only three participants per category and thus a total of 12 participants made it into the live shows that followed.
