The first season of X Factor Malta took place from October 7, 2018 to January 26, 2019 and was the Maltese preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv , Israel . The singer Michela Pace came first as the winner . Her song for the Eurovision Song Contest, Chameleon , was then selected internally.

format

concept

On June 20, 2018, PBS announced that the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2019 would not serve as a preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest. The casting show X Factor Malta will serve as a preliminary decision for the ESC 2019.

In total, the program is to be divided into five rounds. First, the castings take place, where previously selected participants of the jury present themselves. These then decide whether the participant will reach the next round and thus the boot camp . In this, the singers are divided into four categories and receive a mentor who represents one of the jurors. In the boot camp, the participants then have to prove their skills in groups and perform certain songs. The judges then decide who will reach the next round. The remaining participants then reach the Six Chair Challenge . Here the participants have to fight for a place on six chairs per category. For each of the six participants or places that the juror decides, advance to the next round. In Judges Houses , the jurors then choose their three protégés who make it into the live shows. There the participants have to prove their skills again with mottos. In the four live shows, however, the audience then chooses the winner of the first season of X Factor Malta. In addition to participating in the ESC, the winner will also receive a contract with Sony Music Italy .

jury

At the end of July 2018, PBS published the four jurors of the first season spread over several days. They have the task of coaching the singers and supporting them as mentors. The following people are part of the jury:

  • Howard Keith Debono
  • Ray Mercieca
  • Alexandra Alden
  • Ira Losco

Moderation

On July 2, 2018, PBS announced that Ben Camille would host the first season of X Factor Malta .

Choice of contribution

So far, PBS has not yet confirmed whether the winning song of the X Factor Malta winner will automatically be the song that will be performed at the ESC. Finally, on December 11, 2018, PBS launched a call to submit songs to the broadcaster.

Preliminary rounds

Producer casting

The first call for applications took place on June 26, 2018. Interested parties could also send a video to the producers via WhatsApp. Boxes were set up all over Malta to encourage people to take part in the X Factor Malta. The application window closed again on July 4, 2018.

The castings for the producers, which determine which singers make it into the casting round with the jurors, took place from July 13th to 15th, 2018 in Fort St. Elmo.

Jurors casting

The selected applicants who survived the producers' round were allowed to take part in the jurors casting. These were filmed from August 1 to 8, 2018 at Fort St. Angelo and broadcast on October 7, 2018, October 14, 2018, October 21, 2018, October 28, 2018 and November 4, 2018.

A total of 120 participants reached the next round and thus the boot camp .

Boot camp

The bootcamp took place at the Hilton Malta Conference Center on September 9-12, 2018 and was broadcast on November 11th and 18th, 2018.

The 120 participants were divided into four categories in the first part of the program. The first three categories only include solo artists. The boys from 16 to 24 years of age who were mentored by Ira Losco formed the first category. The second category consisted of the girls aged 16 to 24 who were mentored by Howard Keith Debono. The third category consisted of the Overs , which includes participants who are older than 24 years. Ray Mercieca received this as a mentor. The groups were the fourth category and were headed by Alexandra Alden.

First, all 120 participants had to appear before the judges again and perform one song a cappella per category. The boys had to perform See You Again , the Girls A Million Reasons , the Overs had to perform Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me and the groups had to sing My Girl . After all appearances, the jurors had to select 30 participants who did not reach the next round.

In the second part of the, the remaining 90 participants had to choose a song from the Wall of Songs . Since each song could be found four times on the wall, the participants had to perform their songs in groups of four in front of the jurors. The judges then either sent the participants to the next round or sent them to the waiting room, where they could later put together new groups.

In the third and final round of the boot camp , the remaining participants then had to perform a song of their choice in front of the judges. The jury then selected 14 participants per category, so that in the end 56 participants remained for the Six Chair Challenge .

Six Chair Challenge

The Six Chair Challenge took place on October 11 and 12, 2018 and was held in the MFCC - Malta Fairs & Conventions Center.

A total of six participants in each category achieved a place in the next round. These 24 participants are as follows:

  • Boys : Mark Anthony Bartolo, Norbert Bondin, Aidan Cassar, Luke Chappell, Owen Leuellen, Claudio Zammit
  • Girls : Kelsey Bellante, Karin Duff, Nicole Frendo, Danica Muscat, Michela Pace, Jade Vella
  • Overs : Anna Azzopardi, Franklin Calleja, Anna Faniello, Petra, Ben Purplle, Vanessa Lee Sultana
  • Groups : 4th Line, Horizon, Kayati, Prism, Systm12, Xtreme

Judges Houses

The remaining 24 participants now had to prove themselves to their mentors in the next round. They each sang a song and had to convince their mentors as well as their assistants. Only three participants per category and thus a total of 18 participants made it to the subsequent live shows.
