The Fiat 130 HP is a Grand Prix racing car made by Fiat Fiat in 1907.

Background

Prior to 1906, FIAT he FIAT had achieved some major sporting success, but had not been considered a true champion in comparison to the higher powered French cars. When new standards were introduced in 1907 including changes to fuel consumption (a maximum of 30 liters per 100 km/9.42 mpg) and eliminating the weight and displacement limits, FIAT chose to develop a new race car.

Technical Data

The project was entrusted to John Henry, who, working with Guido Fornaca and Carlo Cavalli, developed the 130 HP, a car with a 4-cylinder 1600 cc engine. This engine was very innovative for its time, as it had a bore greater than the stroke, OHV and hemispherical combustion chambers and centrally located spark plugs.

The ignition was provided by a Simms-Bosch magneto, while the power was controlled by a single carburetor. Despite the weight of more than 1000 kg (each piston had a weight of 4.5 kg) the wheels were still made of wood.

Racing Results

The car behaved very well during the Targa Florio (First race of the season), which was won by Felice Nazzaro followed by Vincenzo Lancia [1][2]. The same Nazzaro also won the Kaiserpreis that took place on the Taunus circuit[3][4]. The other two cars FIAT entrusted to Lancia and Louis Wagner finished fifth and sixth respectively.

The same team of Nazzaro, Wagner and Lancia was deployed to the French Grand Prix that took place in Dieppe [5]. During the first 3 turns, Wagner kept the command, but because of a fault had to withdraw. The lead passed to Lancia, who, however, also had to retire for engine trouble, leaving the victory to Nazzaro.
