The Egyptian Premier League ( Arabic الدوري المصري الممتاز, DMG ad-Dawrī al-Miṣrī al-Mumtāz ) is a professional football league and the top division in Egyptian football.
The three most famous clubs are al Ahly SC , al Zamalek SC and Ismaily SC . The league consists of 18 teams. The champion and the runner-up qualify for the CAF Champions League , the third and the cup winners take part in the CAF Confederation Cup . The teams in places 16 to 18 are relegated to the second division (Division One).
At the moment the league is officially called Etisalat Egyptian Premier League after the Emirati Communications Company negotiated a contract with the national association. No more than three foreign players are allowed to play for one club.
The 2010/11 season was suspended from January 27, 2011 to April 13, 2011 due to the revolution in Egypt . This season there were no relegations, but since three clubs were promoted from the second division, the number of clubs in the following season increased to 19. That was after the stadium riots in Port Said at the game between al-Masry and al Ahly on February 1, 2012 initially interrupted and later, on March 10, canceled. At the time, the teams had played 14 to 17 games. The 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons were also canceled.
