Świerzno ( German Schwirsen ) is a village and seat of a rural community in the Powiat Kamieński ( Cammin in Pomerania ) in the Polish West Pomeranian Voivodeship .
Geographical location
Świerzno is located in Western Pomerania , in the northwest of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship , about twelve kilometers east of Kamień Pomorski ( Cammin in Pomerania ) and 23 kilometers west of Trzebiatów ( Treptow ad Rega ). The distance to the Baltic Sea coast near Pobierowo ( Poberow ) in the northwest is about ten kilometers.
The village of Świerzno ( Schwirsen )
history
Schwirsen was a Flemming fiefdom since the beginning of the 14th century . In 1716, Imperial Count Bogislaw Bodo von Flemming united the shares belonging to three different lines. Between 1718 and 1730, Bogislaw Bodo von Flemming had the Schwirsen manor (Polish: dwór myśliwski) built by Johann Andreas Hase from Stargard . In 1734 the estate village came to the Counts of Wartensleben by inheritance . Most recently it belonged to the barons of Rüxleben .
Until 1945 Schwirsen belonged to the district of Cammin i. Pom. in the administrative district of Stettin in the Prussian province of Pomerania . In 1939 the manor village had 378 inhabitants.
Towards the end of the Second World War, the Red Army advanced rapidly on March 4 and 5, 1945 in the direction of the Oder and the Stettiner Haff . Staarz, Stuchow and Schwirsen were reached on March 5th by Soviet tanks coming from the direction of Greifenberg . While Stuchow and Schwirsen received trek permission from the district farmer leader for March 5th at 9 p.m. on March 4th, the eviction order for Staarz came too late. The treks only got to the next villages and then had to turn back. After their return, the difficult fate of the women began and the men were mostly abducted.
After the end of the war, Schwirsen and the whole of Western Pomerania were placed under Polish administration. Schwirsen was renamed Świerzno by the Poles .
Since 1954 Świerzno has been the seat of the rural municipality of the same name in the Powiat Kamieński within the West Pomeranian Voivodeship (until 1998 Szczecin Voivodeship ).

Village / parish church
The half-timbered church in Schwirsen was built in 1681 by Christian Krone . In 1708 it was extended to the west and in 1727 to the east. The planked roof tower is crowned by a curved hood over an octagonal storey. In the middle of the church there is an underground brick-lined crypt with stairs. In the crypt of the standing limestone -made sarcophagus of Count Bogislaw Bodo von Flemming († 1732) and his wife. A rare and particularly magnificent zinc sarcophagus, which had also stood there and in which Georg Ludwig von Flemming , Herr auf Basenthin († 1721), was buried, was given to the State Museum.
In 1938 a flat slab was installed. The pulpit altar from 1727 is kept simple, two-story painted galleries frame it. Before 1945 there was an hourglass from 1727 on the pulpit above the altar, which the pastor could use to orientate himself in time.
The church was a Protestant house of worship for 265 years. Then it was expropriated in favor of the Catholic Church in Poland as a result of the Second World War . On October 13, 1946 she received a new consecration under the name Kościół św. Trojcy ( Trinity / Trinity Church ). Now it is the parish church of the newly formed Parafia (Parish) Świerzno.
Parish
Before 1945, the population of Schwirsen was almost without exception Protestant denomination. Until 1780, the parish of Schwirsen belonged within the parish of Cammin to the parish of Tribsow (now Polish: Trzebieszewo), then to the parish of Groß Justin (Gostyń). In 1784 she came to the parish of Karnitz (Karnice) in the parish of Treptow ad Rega (Trzebiatów), and then moved back to Tribsow in the parish of Cammin (eastern district of the church province of Pomerania of the Church of the Old Prussian Union ), where she stayed until 1945. In 1940, the Schwirsen parish had 250 parishioners, who were last looked after by Pastor Theodor Weigle (* December 25, 1903, † December 13, 2001) from Tribsow.
Today Świerzno is mainly inhabited by Catholics . The place is now the seat of its own parish, which belongs to the deanery Kamień Pomorski ( Cammin in Pomerania ) in the Archdiocese of Stettin-Cammin of the Catholic Church in Poland . Evangelical church members living here are now looked after by the Stettin parish in the diocese of Wroclaw of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland . The church is located in Trzebiatów ( Treptow ad Rega ), where the Kościół św. Jana (Johanneskirche, an old Lutheran church before 1945) is a Protestant church.

Gmina Świerzno
Świerzno is the seat of the rural municipality of the same name , which was formed in 1954 from the Gmina Ganiec ( Gahnz , 1945-1946 Gmina Chomino ( Kummin )) and the Gmina Gostyń ( Great Justin ). With its 140.20 km² it ranks 77th among the municipalities in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship and takes 13.9% of the area of the entire Powiat Kamieński. The Gmina Świerzno has about 4,200 inhabitants.

Provincial road 103 ( Kamień Pomorski ( Cammin i. Pom. ) - Trzebiatów ( Treptow ad Rega )) runs through the area of Gmina Świerzno, where the province road 105 meets that of Rzesznikowo ( Reselkow ) on state road 6 (former imperial road) 2 , today also Europastraße 28 ) and Gryfice ( Greifenberg i. Pom. ).

In 1906 the railway line from Treptow ad Rega (Trzebiatów) to Cammin (Kamień Pomorski) was built, which connected to the line from Wietstock (Wysoka Kamieńska) to Cammin, which was built in 1892. The present parts of the municipality Jatki ( Brendemühl ) and Gostyniec ( Klein Justin ) were connected to this route with their own train stations. In 1945 the section was closed as a result of the war, so that there is no longer a railway connection for Gmina Świerzno.
