history
The franchise of Winston-Salem IceHawks of the United Hockey League was founded in 1999 by Winston-Salem , North Carolina , to Glens Falls, New York, relocated and renamed the Adirondack IceHawks. There they replaced the Adirondack Red Wings from the American Hockey League . During the seven years of its existence, the team has been one of the most consistent in the league. In 2001 and 2005 they finished their division in first place. In the playoffs they reached the second round in the 2000/01 season, in which they defeated the New Haven Knights 2-3 wins in the best-of-five series . The team had previously received a bye .
In the summer of 2004, ESPN commentator Steve Levy and former NHL player Barry Melrose bought the franchise and renamed it Adirondack Frostbite. The suicide of head coach Marc Potvin on January 13, 2006 a few hours before a league game against the Kalamazoo Wings caused a stir . On June 12, 2006, the game was officially closed after the team owners and the arena management could not agree on a new lease. Since the 2009/10 season , the Adirondack Phantoms AHL team has once again been a professional ice hockey team in town.
