DJ Koze (* 1972 in Flensburg ; bourgeois Stefan Kozalla ) is a German DJ , music producer , musician and label operator .

Life

In the early 1990s he started as a rapper and DJ with various hip-hop groups in Flensburg. In 1991 DJ Koze came second in the German DMC Championship (an offshoot of the Disco Mix Club ). Two years later he moved to Hamburg and together with Cosmic DJ , DJ Stachy and the "terrible Sven" founded the hip-hop formation Fischmob , which lasted about five years.

At the same time, he also dealt with electronic music , increased his popularity as a DJ and produced some remixes , some under the pseudonym Adolf Noise . In 1996 the wounds called " Chillout - Radio Play " appeared , s. Legs open . Particularly successful was 1999's mixture of Blumfeld Single thousand tears depth with the minimal house -Track Loverboy from Steve Bug . A collection of such remixes appeared in 2000 under the title Music Is Okay .

With Max Goldt as the speaker, he released the single Deine Reime sind Schwein (real pigs) as Adolf Noise in 2001 , a satire on battle rap tracks in German hip hop.

Together with Cosmic DJ and Erobique he founded the project International Pony , from which the album We Love Music was released in 2002 and the LP Mit Dir sind wir vier in 2006 .

Since 2003 Koze has published several techno maxis on the Cologne label Kompakt under the name Monaco Schranze (a corruption of Monaco Franze and Schranz ). His second mix CD with the title All People Is My Friends was released there in 2004 .

As a DJ he has performed at major festivals and raves such as Coachella , Osheaga , Outside Lands, Roskilde , Sónar , Tomorrowland , SonneMondSterne , Melt !, Time Warp , Mayday , Mutek, Amsterdam Dance Event , Snowbombing and Nature One . In reader surveys by the music magazines Spex , Intro and de: Bug , he was voted DJ of the year several times.

The productions running under the name Adolf Noise are generally more experimental and eccentric. Here, too, the often almost plaintive humor, known from the times of the fish mob, comes into play. The single too much time? from this, in an ironic way, a statement by pop singer Gunter Gabriel at a performance in Eisleben in September 2004, with which he insulted the audience as unemployed and thus caused a scandal in East Germany, is sampled. He has been running the Pampa Records label since 2009 .

With his album Amygdala , released on Pampa Records in 2013 , he entered the official German and Swiss charts for the first time. He was also awarded the Critics' Prize at the 2014 Echo Awards. On June 15, 2015, the 50th edition he mixed was released on the Berlin label Studio K7 for the twentieth anniversary of the DJ mix series DJ-Kicks , which received a lot of national and international attention.

In January 2018 DJ Koze announced his fourth studio album entitled Knock Knock , which was released on May 4, 2018 on his label Pampa Records. It includes features by Justin Vernon ( Bon Iver ), Kurt Wagner ( Lambchop ), Sophia Kennedy , Róisín Murphy and Speech ( Arrested Development ). The radio station ByteFM describes it as a "tightrope between weirdness and pop" and made it the album of the week and the most played record of the year.

On July 12, 2018, his remix for the track Humility from the single The Now Now by the British band Gorillaz was released .

On October 19, 2018, he was awarded the prize for pop culture in the “Favorite Producer” category at the Tempodrom Berlin .

On December 12, 2019, DJ Koze performed for the first time in the concert hall of the Sydney Opera House and also presented his new A / V show "Popup Jungle" for the first time.

Music videos

The official music video for Pick Up , the second single from the album Knock Knock , has received over 3 million views on YouTube and is cited by DJ Koze as "A video that leaves room for your imagination". It was animated by Terlina Lie.
