Aldan ( Yakut and Russian Алдан ) is a city in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) in Russia with 21,275 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

Aldan is located in the Aldan highlands , about 470 km southwest of the republic capital Yakutsk on the Orto-Sala river , which flows into the right Aldan tributary, Seligdar . From the Aldan River itself, the city is about 30 km away.

The city of Aldan is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name (Ulus).

Aldan is a railway station on the Amur-Yakut main line leading from the Baikal-Amur main line to Tommot (continuation to Yakutsk under construction). The city is also on the M56 ( Lena ) highway , which connects Newer on the Trans-Siberian Railway with Yakutsk, and it also has an airport.

history

Aldan was founded in 1923 after the discovery of rich gold deposits by the Yakut gold prospector M. Tarabukin and the head of the gold prospector W. Bertin as a settlement with a mine on the Nesametny stream (Russian: Незаме́тный for inconspicuous, hidden ). In 1939 the place received its town charter under its current name.

economy

Aldan is the center of the southern Yakut mining region with gold and mica production . There are also companies for metalworking as well as the wood and building materials industry.
