Geographical location

Alton is in the south of Penobscot County. The Dead Stream flows through the west of the town in a southerly direction and joins the Pushaw Stream, which flows eastwards . history

Alton was organized as an independent town on March 9, 1844. The area was previously part of the Argyle Plantation. Originally, the area was Township No. 3 called and bought by Indians.

A two-person Taylorcraft BC-12D , (N95176), apparently crashed over Alton on January 30, 1983 shortly after take-off. After six days, the plane was discovered by a ranger. The pilot was dead, but the passenger survived.
