Alton is a town in Penobscot County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 890 people lived there in 385 households on an area of 110.20 km².

Geographical location
Alton is in the south of Penobscot County. The Dead Stream flows through the west of the town in a southerly direction and joins the Pushaw Stream, which flows eastwards . There are only a few smaller lakes in the area, such as Holland Pond and Pickerel Pond , which are centrally located. The surface is flat, without any significant elevations.

history
Alton was organized as an independent town on March 9, 1844. The area was previously part of the Argyle Plantation. Originally, the area was Township No. 3 called and bought by Indians.
A two-person Taylorcraft BC-12D , (N95176), apparently crashed over Alton on January 30, 1983 shortly after take-off. After six days, the plane was discovered by a ranger. The pilot was dead, but the passenger survived.

Alton is on Interstate 95 , which runs through the southeast corner of town. The Maine State Route 16 runs north to south centrally through the area of the Town.
