Surpriz

Sürpriz ( Turkish : "Surprise") was a German-Turkish pop group that represented Germany at the 1999 Eurovision Song Contest . It consisted exclusively of artists of Turkish origin.

Band history

The group was founded by the bandleader Cihan Özden especially for the Eurovision Song Contest and with its title Reise nach Jerusalem - Kudüs'e seyahat, written by Ralph Siegel and Bernd Augener , took second place behind Corinna in the German preliminary decision on March 12, 1999 in Bremen May . After she was subsequently disqualified because her song did not correspond to the rules of the time (previous CD release), Sürpriz were sent to Jerusalem as German representatives for the Eurovision Song Contest .

Before that, however, participation would almost have been prevented because OGAE Germany e. V., a German fan club for the song competition, tried to portray the title Reise nach Jerusalem as a plagiarism of the earlier song Wo geht die Reise hin , also composed by Ralph Siegel . This was published in 1984 as the B-side of the single Tingel Tangel Mann, with which the group Harmony Four participated in the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest. As in the May case, this raised the question of compliance with the rules. As a result, the group missed the registration deadline for the competition. An independent jury made up of members of the EBU in Geneva , who agreed that the song was not a self-plagiarism by Siegel, allowed the group to participate.

In the German preliminary round, they presented their song in Turkish, German and English; at the international appearance they added a line of text in Hebrew. You could get a third place; The highest scores were not only obtained from Turkey and Israel , but also from the Netherlands (which have a high proportion of fellow citizens of Turkish origin), Poland and Portugal .

Despite the good result, Sürpriz was unable to achieve commercial success; they could not place themselves in the German charts. An album produced the following year was only released in Turkey. After a few changes of line-up (among other things, Chihan's then partner Aynur Aydın was a member of the group for a short time), Sürpriz separated in 2002.

Jazz Akkar took part in the third season of The Voice of Germany in 2013 .
