history
The current municipality has been inhabited for more than 2000 years. Due to its convenient location in the upper Lavant valley, a Roman road was located in what is now the municipality. It led from Wolfsberg via Bad Sankt Leonhard to today's Styria .
The place in the dominion of the bishopric of Bamberg developed around the Leonhardskirche, consecrated by Bishop Otto (1106/39), was first mentioned in 1287 and quickly developed into a market under the protection of Gomarn Castle . St. Leonhard already had city rights before 1311, which were confirmed in a document by Bishop Heinrich in July 1325 . In 1759 St. Leonhard was sold to the Habsburgs - like the other properties of the Bamberg Monastery in Carinthia .
The city experienced its heyday in the 15th and 16th centuries when gold and silver mining flourished in the nearby Klieninger Graben. Among the rich trades that followed the “Klieninger Gold Rush” were members of the famous Augsburg merchant family, the Fugger , who soon operated dozens of mines and tunnels in the region. At that time, the famous doctor and naturalist Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, better known as Paracelsus , is said to have visited the mining area and subjected the medicinal Preblauer sour water to an initial analysis. The Preblauer Säuerling, which was already served on the table of the Bamberg bishop in the Middle Ages, is today widely known as the “ Preblauer Heil- und Mineralwasser”.
The mining of iron, which also played a major economic role, was finally stopped in 1876. The community with its sulfur spring and the Preblauer Sauerbrunnen transformed itself into a health resort and medicinal bath in the 20th century, and in 1935 the city was renamed "Bad Sankt Leonhard". The former spa was demolished and a new spa was built.
In 1964 and 1973, the municipality of Bad St. Leonhard expanded through two municipal reforms. The first of these took place on January 1, 1964 with the registration of the communities Erzberg-Görlitzen with community headquarters in the Rotte Loben and the community of Theißing . On January 1, 1973, another community reform was carried out. The communities of Kliening and Schiefling were incorporated into the Lavant Valley . The former community Gräbern-Prebl were divided into Gräbern-Prebl-Nord and -Süd. The southern part came to the municipality of Wolfsberg , the northern part to Bad St. Leonhard. Therefore it also happened that pupils from the Mondscheinsiedlung went to school in Prebl, but later to Schiefling.
population
Population development
Population censuses have been carried out regularly since 1869. The population rose from around 4,200 to 5,200 between 1869 and 1971 and has been falling since then. In the 10 years from 2001 to 2011, the resident population fell sharply due to a slightly negative birth balance (–25) and a negative migration balance (–263). This trend also continued in the following years.
Citizenship and Religion
According to the 2001 census, Bad Sankt Leonhard had 4,816 inhabitants, 97.3% of whom were Austrian citizens . 96.4% of the population confessed to the Roman Catholic and 0.7% to the Protestant Church, 1.6% is without religious belief.

Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
At the beginning of the 1980s, the connection to the motorway network took place at the Bad St. Leonhard junction on the south motorway . For the time being, you could only drive in the direction of Graz / Vienna, but with the opening of the Wolfsberg Nord - Bad St. Leonhard section in 1986, you could also use today's Villach lane. It was not until 1999 that one could continuously reach Klagenfurt, Villach and Italy from Bad St. Leonhard on a motorway.
Until July 2012, Obdacher Straße B 78 ran through the local area of Bad St. Leonhard and had a high volume of traffic. Above all, the number of trucks rose sharply, which is due on the one hand to the expansion of the timber industry in Bad St. Leonhard and the Styrian community of Obdach , and on the other hand to the completion of the Obdach and Zeltweg bypasses . It was particularly disadvantageous that in Bad St. Leonhard the street led across the main square, with a narrow point between the Geiger inn and the old city wall .
That is why Bad St. Leonhard has been thinking of a bypass for several years. A four-year planning process came to a conclusion on June 22, 2006, from which the route emerged as the most economical and most resident-friendly variant. This was the council unanimously approved the town of Bad St. Leonhard. A citizens' initiative already waived the demand for an enclosure in the Lower City area because the then traffic officer and regional councilor Gerhard Dörfler ( FPK ) promised to increase the planned noise protection wall in this area from four to five and a half meters and to provide it with highly absorbent elements. This measure was also decided in the municipal council.
The decided western bypass of Bad St. Leonhard runs near the Lavant and includes an underground route with a length of 490 meters. Construction began in spring 2009 and the total costs should be 36 million euros. A report by the State Audit Office of Carinthia published in February 2009 complained that the costs were almost doubled. According to the report, the actual costs were 68.7 million euros. Ultimately, the total costs came to around EUR 46 million. On July 15, 2012, the bypass was officially opened by then Governor Gerhard Dörfler.
Public transportation
Bad St. Leonhard was connected to the railway network in 1900 with the opening of the Zeltweg - Wolfsberg section of the Lavant Valley Railway . After rationalization to a pair of passenger trains between Zeltweg and Bad St. Leonhard in December 2001, this section was no longer served from August 2010. Until 2017, two pairs of trains continued to run between Bad St. Leonhard and Wolfsberg on weekdays (except during the summer holidays). Since then, only goods traffic has been operated between Wolfsberg and Zeltweg . The largest customer is the mondi paper mill in Frantschach .
As part of the cessation of passenger traffic, the Wiesenau, Preblau-Sauerbrunn and Twimberg stops (all of which were formerly train stations) were closed. The Bad St. Leonhard station will continue to be used for freight traffic.
For the Postbus road route 6931 (Wolfsberg - Bad St. Leonhard - Reichenfels - Zeltweg), which was almost only served on school days, the 5484 bus was installed in December 2017 (parallel to the discontinuation of rail passenger traffic). This runs from Reichenfels via Bad St. Leonhard and Wolfsberg to St. Andrä train station in Lavanttal . Every hour on weekdays, there are four course pairs on weekends. At the Wolfsberg and St. Andrä train stations there are a. Direct connections to the S-Bahn line 3 to Klagenfurt main station , in Reichenfels there are transfer options from and to Zeltweg.
With the new tendering of the bus routes in Lavanttal, the ÖBB-Postbus GmbH u. a. also the connections to the district of Schiefling . Since then, the buses to Preitenegg and Pack have also departed from the Prebl Alter Bahnhof stop and have been adapted to line 5484.

coat of arms
The oldest city charter before 1311 gave rise to the right to use a seal , the oldest surviving fragment from 1391 showing the church patron still without a shield, another from 1486 shows it with the shield of the Bamberg bishopric. In today's coat of arms, Saint Leonhard is shown growing with a chain, abbot and book from the Bamberg coat of arms. The coat of arms was confirmed to the municipality on April 29, 1970 and at the same time a flag was awarded, which shows the colors yellow-black with an incorporated coat of arms.
The official blazon of the coat of arms reads:
“In gold the Benedictine Abbot St. Leonhard with wreath tonsure and black habit, the silver abbot's staff in his right hand, a blue book with gold edging in the left, a black chain with a broken end link hung over his right arm growing on a golden shield, which shows an erect, black, red-tongued and red-armored lion overlaid by a silver diagonal thread.
