The 1971/72 season is the sixth season of the Basketball Bundesliga . The top division in German men's club basketball, until 1990 limited to the area of West Germany without the GDR , was played in two regional groups, North and South, and determined the eight participants in the final round of the German championship.
Due to the reduction of the regional groups of the Basketball Bundesliga to eight teams each, four teams from the top division were relegated at this season. In the north this affected the BG Buer , the SV St. Georg von 1895 from Hamburg , the SSC Göttingen and the Oldenburger Turnerbund . In the south, TSV 1860 Munich , TuS REI Koblenz and EK 1847 Eppelheim had to compete one class lower. The PSV Green White Frankfurt refrained from further participation in the National Basketball League, which is why the USC Mainz was able to keep the class. The promoters of this season were Hamburg TB and SGN Essen / RuWa Dellwig in the north and the founding members of the Bundesliga, SV Möhringen and Darmstadt BC, returned to the top division in the south .
The first four teams of the regional groups in the main round qualified for two final round groups, in which two teams from a regional group played in a final round group according to the placements in the main round. The teams placed "oddly" met the teams placed " evenly " in the other regional group. The two group winners in the final round made it to the semi-finals, with the addition of the two-legged friendship deciding the winner. A previously held small final for third place was omitted and the champion was decided by adding the two legs of the duel between the two semi-final winners.
