The 1966/67 season was the first season of the German basketball league . The top division in German men's club basketball, until 1990 limited to the area of West Germany without the GDR , was played in two regional groups, North and South, and determined the four participants in the final round of the German championship.

Season Notes

The basketball league replaced the four major leagues North, South, Southwest and West as the top division. In addition to the relay winners VfL Osnabrück (North), FC Bayern Munich (South), MTV 1846 Gießen (Southwest) and ATV Düsseldorf (West), four other clubs from the major league relays qualified for the regional groups, including the reigning champions USC Heidelberg . In the new regional relays of the Bundesliga, which were played with ten teams, the clubs from the Oberliga North and West formed the group North and the clubs from the Oberliga Süd and Südwest formed the group South. ASC Gelsenkirchen moved up for the qualified Alemannia Aachen .

The main round was held in round- robin mode within the respective regional groups. In that season, undecided game results were also included in the evaluation. Defending champion USC Heidelberg failed to move into the final round after they had played a draw at GW Frankfurt after a home win and were tied with the Frankfurters in the final table South. In this case, it was not a direct comparison , as was customary later, that decided, but a play-off that GW Frankfurt won in Darmstadt with 68:67 and thus made it into the final round of the two best teams from the regional groups.

In the final round, the participants played out the finalists in a two-way round in accordance with the group placements. The two group winners, VfL Osnabrück and MTV Gießen, entered the final in the Carl-Diem-Halle in Mannheim's Herzogenriedpark . After an 85:73 success, MTV 1846 Gießen won its second championship in total and was able to regain the championship title after losing in the final the year before. VfL Osnabrück, on the other hand, won the final of the DBB cup competition, which was held for the first time, with 86:74 over ATV Düsseldorf and became the first basketball cup winner .
