The Blues (dt. The Blues ; formerly Auckland Blues called) are a rugby union -Mannschaft from the New Zealand city of Auckland . The team plays in the international super rugby league. It represents the regional associations Northland RFU , North Harbor RU and Auckland RFU , whose catchment area includes Auckland City , the cities of North Shore City and Waitakere City and the northernmost part of the North Island . Home games are played in Eden Park , the largest stadium in the country. The team colors are blue and navy blue.

history

The team was formed in 1996 to represent the Auckland region in the then newly founded Super 12 league. The catchment area of the franchise was composed differently at the beginning, as the NZRFU feared that the Blues could dominate too much due to the numerous national players in their squad. Northland and North Harbor were initially represented by the Chiefs .

At the end of the 1990s, the number of national players in the Blues fell, so that in 1999 the regional associations represented were swapped. The Blues gave Counties Manukau and Thames Valley to the Chiefs and received Northland and North Harbor in return. This resulted in a geographically more compact catchment area.

When the national championship, the National Provincial Championship , was dissolved in its previous form in 2006 and replaced by the Air New Zealand Cup and the Heartland Championship , the Blues were the only New Zealand super rugby team whose member associations were all in the higher-class Air New Zealand Cup were represented.

So far, the Blues have won the championship three times (1996, 1997, 2003).
