2021 Europe Bulgaria had applied with the Wassil Levski National Stadium for three group games and one round of 16 or quarter-finals, but was not considered. In the direct qualification , the Bulgarians failed to England and the Czech Republic, but still have the chance to qualify via the playoffs.

EM 1960

For the European Football Championship in 1960, which was still held as the "European Cup of Nations", Bulgaria had to qualify through the round of 16 against Yugoslavia . After a 2-0 defeat in Belgrade , the 1-1 draw in Sofia , in which Todor Diev scored the first qualifying goal for the Bulgarians, was not enough to reach the next round. Yugoslavia then reached the finals and lost to the USSR in the first final .

EM 1964

Four years later, when more teams took part, the round of 16 was preceded by a preliminary round . In this, the Bulgarians met Portugal. After both had won their home games 3-1, there was a playoff in Rome , which the Bulgarians won 1-0. In the second round, France was the opponent. Bulgaria presented a 1-0 win in Sofia, but the French beat it 3-1 in Paris. France then failed in the quarterfinals to Hungary .

EM 1968

For the European Football Championship in 1968, group games were scheduled for the first time in qualifying . Bulgaria had to face Portugal and its two Scandinavian neighbors Sweden and Norway . Bulgaria was the only team to win all home games as well as in Sweden and also achieved two goalless draws in Norway and Portugal, making Bulgaria group winners. In the quarter-finals, now taking place as the next qualification stage, they met Italy and had to submit again. The 3: 2 in Sofia was not enough as the Italians achieved a 2: 0 in Rome. Italy was thus qualified for the final round of the best four teams, was designated as host and was able to win the title for the only time so far. This made Italy the first team to become world champions, Olympic champions and European champions. For the Bulgarians, reaching the quarter-finals until 1996 was the best result.

European Championship 1972

Bulgaria could not qualify for the European Championship finals in 1972 . In a group with Olympic champions Hungary, France and Norway only the second place was taken behind the Hungarians. The 2-0 defeat in Hungary was particularly decisive. The Hungarians were then able to qualify for the final round in the quarter-finals, where they ultimately came in fourth - their last place in the top four at an EM or World Cup to date.

EM 1976

In 1976, the final round was held for the last time with four teams, Bulgaria finished in qualification group 8 behind defending champions and world champions Germany and Greece before Malta , against which the only victories come in only 3rd place. Germany then reached the finals again, but lost them on penalties against Czechoslovakia .

EM 1980

For the European Championship in Italy, which was held for the first time with eight teams, Bulgaria could not qualify . In a group with England , Northern Ireland , Ireland and Denmark , the Bulgarians only finished fourth and could only win the home games against Ireland and Denmark. England reached the finals as group winners, but failed there in the group stage.

EM 1984

Bulgaria also did not qualify for the European Championship in France . In a group with Yugoslavia , Wales and Norway it was only enough for third place, as the last decisive game in Yugoslavia was lost 3-2. Yugoslavia reached the finals as group winners, but failed there in the group stage without winning a point.

EM 1988

For the European Championship in Germany, Bulgaria should against Ireland , Bulgaria , Scotland and Luxembourg qualify . In a very even group in which only Luxembourg did not win a game, Bulgaria finished second with a 0-1 in their last home game against Scotland and missed the European Championship. But the victory was of no use to the Scots either and so Ireland reached the European Championship finals for the first time.

EM 1992

In qualifying for the European Championship in 1992 , Bulgaria had to compete against Scotland, Switzerland , Romania and San Marino , which participated for the first time. After a 2-0 draw in Switzerland, Romania won 3-0, but then only wins against San Marino, which also lost against all other teams, so that the Bulgarians only finished fourth in this balanced group. Group winners were the Scots, who were able to qualify for the finals for the first time, but were eliminated in the group stage.

EM 1996

After the Bulgarians under national coach Dimitar Penew won a World Cup game for the first time at the soccer World Cup in 1994 , thus surviving the group stage for the first time and even advancing into the game for third place, they were also able to qualify for a European Championship finals for the first time under him. In qualifying , the Bulgarians met Germany , which they had surprisingly eliminated in the World Cup quarter-finals, Wales and Albania as well as Georgia and Moldova , which participated for the first time. Bulgaria then won their first World Cup revenge against Germany 3-2 in Sofia, but lost the second leg in Hamburg 3-1, so that Germany was group winners and Bulgaria came second. As the second-best runner-up in the group, the Bulgarians were also qualified for the European Championship finals, which were held for the first time with 16 teams.

In England the Bulgarians were drawn into a group with France, Spain and Romania. In the first European Championship game in their history, they beat Spain 1-1, with World Cup top scorer Christo Stoitschkow scoring the Bulgarians first goal with a converted penalty. Stoitschkow also made it 1-0 in the third minute of the next game against Romania for the Bulgarians' only European Championship victory to date and also scored the only goal for the Bulgarians in the 1: 3 against France in the last group game, who thus as Third group eliminated. With his three goals, Stoitschkow was one of the four second best goal scorers of the tournament. Qualifying opponents Germany, however, won the title for the third time. After the end in the preliminary round, Dimitar Penew handed over the office of national coach to his assistant Christo Bonew , who managed to lead the Bulgarians to the 1998 World Cup , where the Bulgarians did not survive the preliminary round.

EM 2000

For the EM 2000, the Bulgarians could not qualify again. In the qualification they went under Dimitar Dimitrov , who had taken over the office of national coach after the preliminary round at the 1998 World Cup. In a group with Sweden , England , Poland and Luxembourg they only got two wins against Luxembourg, which also lost all other games. The Bulgarians were only fourth. Christo Stoitschkow ended his national team career with the third from last group game, a 1-1 draw against England, which meant that the Bulgarians no longer had a chance to qualify. Sweden and England qualified for the European Championship, but failed in the group stage. With the failure in the qualification, the term of office of Dimitar Dimitrov ended, his successor was Stojtscho Mladenow , who did not manage to lead the Bulgarians to the 2002 World Cup , and was therefore no longer in office for the next European Championship qualification.

EM 2004

In qualifying for the 2004 European Championship, Bulgarians met Belgium , Croatia , Estonia and Andorra . Bulgaria only lost the last game in Croatia when the qualification was already secured, but Croatia reached the playoffs of the group runners-up and could also qualify through it.

In Portugal, the Bulgarians were drawn into a group with Sweden, Denmark and Italy . In the first game against Sweden they kept the 0-0 for half an hour, but then had to accept five more goals and conceded their highest defeat in a European Championship game. They lost their second game against Denmark 2-0 and also captain Stilian Petrow with a yellow-red card . This meant that the Bulgarians no longer had a chance to qualify for the quarter-finals. In the last group game, Martin Petrow scored the only goal for the Bulgarians at this European Championship with a penalty against Italy in the 45th minute, but Italy turned the game around in the second half and won 2-1. Bulgaria was eliminated as the bottom of the group and the only team at this EM without a point and said goodbye to the EM stage for at least 12 years. National coach Plamen Markow resigned after the European Championship ended, his successor was Christo Stoitschkow , who had little success.

EM 2008

In qualification group G for the European Championship 2008, Bulgaria met Romania , the Netherlands , Belarus , Albania , Slovenia and once again Luxembourg. The first two teams were qualified for the finals in Switzerland and Austria . Romania qualified as group winners for the European Championship finals, the Netherlands reached the European Championship as second in the group. The Bulgarians, who started the qualification under Christo Stoitschkow , only finished third, as they only scored 1-1 in the third from last game in Albania and thus had one point less than the Dutch in the end. Stoitschkow resigned in April 2007 after five qualifying games, Stanimir Stoilow followed him as interim coach for two games against Belarus, both of which were won. Then Dimitar Penew took over the office of national coach, who was replaced by Plamen Markow after the narrowly missed qualification , but who was also dismissed after the missed qualification for the 2010 World Cup .

EM 2012

The qualification for the Euro 2012 went even worse . In a group with England , Montenegro , Switzerland and Wales , the Bulgarians took only the last place and could only win the game in Wales. In the qualification they started with two defeats, after which national coach Stanimir Stoilow was dismissed. His successor was the German record international player Lothar Matthäus , who could not turn the tide and, after Bulgaria failed to qualify, was dismissed again. He was succeeded by Michail Madanski . Group winners England went to the European Championship, Montenegro failed in the playoffs of the group runners-up to the Czech Republic.

EM 2016

For the first time, 24 teams took part in the European Championship. For the draw for the qualifying groups , which took place on February 23, 2014, Bulgaria was only placed in Pot 4. Bulgaria was drawn into Group H. From the other pots the following were drawn: Italy , Croatia , Norway , Azerbaijan and Malta .

The first two in the group qualified directly for the European Championship finals. Had the third-placed team finished third in the group, they would also have qualified directly. The remaining third in the group played four other participants in the playoffs.

Bulgaria started the qualification with a 2-1 in Azerbaijan, but then lost two games and only reached a 1-1 draw against Malta whereupon national coach Lyuboslaw Penew was on leave. Under his successor Iwajlo Petew a 2-2 win against Italy was achieved, so that the Bulgarians were in fourth place after half of the games. Although they won 1-0 against Malta before the summer break, two defeats after the summer break meant that Bulgaria could no longer qualify.

EM 2021

For the first pan-European European Championship finals, Bulgaria had also applied to host games with the Vasil Levski National Stadium , but was not considered. In the qualifying , had to take part in the final round, the organizers of games, it had the Bulgarians with England , the Czech Republic , the Kosovo and Montenegro to do. The Bulagren started with two 1-1 draws, first at home against Montenegro and then in Kosovo, after which Petar Chubchev's tenure as national coach ended. This was followed by defeats in the Czech Republic (1: 2), at home against Kosovo (2: 3) and in England (0: 4) under the new national coach Krassimir Balakow . In Montenegro they were able to force a goalless draw, but now had no chance to qualify directly. Three days later they lost 6-0 at home to England. The game was overshadowed by racist insults against English players by Bulgarian viewers, after which Balakov resigned. As runner-up in group C3 of the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League , the Bulgarians still have the chance to qualify via the playoffs. In March 2020, they will initially have home rights against Hungary and, in the event of a win, would also have home rights against the winner of the game between Iceland and Romania.
