The multiple award-winning Herbig became known, among other things, with the TV show Bullyparade and the films Der Schuh des Manitu and (T) Raumschiff Surprise - Period 1 , the latter being among the most watched German productions of all time .

Career

Michael "Bully" Herbig completed a photography training after graduating from secondary school. His career as "the most successful humorist in German cinema" began in 1991 with regular appearances on radio programs such as Langemann und die Morgencrew and Die Bayern-Cops (around 800 episodes) with Rick Kavanian . Herbig was later seen on TV Munich in the TV program Der Langemann .

His first nationwide broadcast was Bully's Late Light Show , a weekly radio comedy that was broadcast nationwide on Radio Energy 's stations. Here he worked together for the first time in a team with his friends Christian Tramitz and Rick Kavanian. Herbig adapted many characters and series for the TV show Bullyparade , which was shown in ProSieben's evening program from 1997 to 2002 .

Herbig acted as voice actor in the films Back to Gaya and A Kingdom for a Lama . In 1996 he founded herbX Medienproduktion GmbH, in 1998 herbX Tonstudios and in 1999 herbX Film GmbH. Herbig made his debut as a film director in 2000 with the feature film Erkan & Stefan by the comedy duo of the same name. He worked as a director, producer, author and actor in Der Schuh des Manitu (2001), which is the ninth most successful film in Germany to date with 11.7 million visitors . In Austria, the film became the most successful film to date.

Herbig's second parody (T) Raumschiff Surprise - Period 1 was released on July 22nd, 2004. Like Der Schuh des Manitu, it is based on characters from the Bully Parade and recorded a total of 9.1 million visitors.

From September 13, 2004 on ProSieben Herbig's show Bully & Rick started , of which 28 episodes were broadcast up to January 1, 2007.

His friends and colleagues Rick Kavanian and Christoph Maria Herbst also took on roles in the work presented by Constantin Film and produced by Christian Becker.

Herbig's animated film Lissi and the Wilder Kaiser premiered on October 25, 2007 . As so often, his close friends Christian Tramitz and Rick Kavanian played along; Bath salts were special guests.

From August 5 to November 13, 2008, Herbig filmed the animated series Wickie and the Strong Men as a feature film . He directed and can be seen in a supporting role. The cast of the supporting roles of the "strong men" was shown as the casting show Bully sucht die stark Männer from April 15, 2008 to May 20, 2008 on ProSieben .

In July 2008 Herbig sued the Munich district court against the computer game developer Take 2 Interactive because of its game Bully: Die Ehrenlunde . Due to his nickname "Bully" and the title of the game, he feared that he "could be associated with a violent game" and demanded a sales stop and a fine. On October 23, 2008, the District Court of Munich I decided that there was no risk of confusion between the computer game and Michael "Bully" Herbig.

After his success as a director and filmmaker, Herbig concentrated more on his work as an actor. In 2011, he slipped into the role of a cabaret comedian in the Third Reich in the tragic comedy Hotel Lux , directed by Leander Haußmann .

In 2011, under the direction of Helmut Dietl, in the Kir Royal follow-up project Zettl , he embodied Max Zettl, who rose from chauffeur to editor-in-chief of an online magazine in Berlin, following in the footsteps of the Munich gossip reporter Baby Schimmerlos. In 2012, Herbig was honored with the first-ever Bernd Eichinger Prize at the 62nd German Film Prize .

In 2013 he appeared in a supporting role in the American comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, alongside Steve Carell , Steve Buscemi and Jim Carrey . Herbig's comedy Buddy was released in German cinemas on December 25, 2013 . Herbig himself declared the film to be his "best since Manitou's shoe ". Parallel to the cinema release, the sitcom Bully macht Buddy was broadcast on ProSieben in November and December 2013 . Herbig directed, produced and played himself in the lead role. Rick Kavanian , Gisa Flake and Sandra Koltai could be seen at his side .

The film Ballon was released at the end of September 2018 , in which he acted as director, screenwriter and producer. It is his first directorial work that is not designed as a comedy, as the film belongs to the thriller genre. The balloon flight of the Strelzyk and Wetzel families from the GDR to West Germany in 1979 is described.

Others

Herbig was nicknamed "Bully" when he was a child because he wore a jersey from FC Bayern Munich to school , whose sponsor at the time, Magirus-Deutz, advertised with the slogan "The cops are coming!" From then on, he was called "Bully" by a teacher, as several boys in the class were named Michael. Since 2008 the nickname has been part of the artist name.

On June 11, 2011 (for the public: June 14), Bavaria Filmstadt opened the Bullyversum , a 1500 m² adventure center dedicated to Herbig's life and work. It contained exhibits such as the children's room “Bullys” and event stations for his films (Schuh des Manitu, Hui Buh, (T) Raumschiff Surprise, Lissi and the wild emperor). Among other things, visitors could slip into film costumes and shoot a scene that was cut into a film. In November 2018, the Bullyversum was dissolved again for reasons of space.
