German Beach Volleyball Championship 2020

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Beach Volleyball Championship 2020 is to take place in Timmendorfer Strand from September 3 to 6 . Traditionally, the venue is the Ahmann-Hager-Arena . The defending champions are Karla Borger and Julia Sude for women and the brothers Bennet and David Poniewaz for men.

New mode

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany , the Techniker Beach Tour was canceled in March 2020 . As a result, the players could not, as usual, collect points in the German tournament series to qualify for the German championship. In June, the DVV announced that the championship in Timmendorfer Strand will take place anyway and that three tournaments per gender will be held beforehand. The teams are divided into two groups. The best eight teams in the ranking that are automatically qualified for the German championship play the tournaments in preparation. International teams can also take part. The teams with a lower ranking in the ranking list and participants with a wildcard determine the other DM participants. In every qualifying tournament, the finalists and the third place win a starting place for Timmendorf. One of the nine teams serves as a successor ("back-up duo").

Attendees

For men and women, sixteen duos each take part in the German championship. The eight best-placed teams in the DVV ranking are automatically qualified. The remaining places will be awarded at the qualifying tournaments of the Comdirect Beach Tour 2020 .

Preparatory and qualifying tournaments

The tournaments before the German championship will be held from July 17th to August 23rd, alternating between women and men on a weekly basis. Initially, there will be two tournaments each in Düsseldorf. For this purpose, the DVV uses the facility next to the Merkur Spiel-Arena , where the Beach League previously took place. The last tournaments will be held at the federal base in Hamburg. The qualification tournaments have been held under the name Comdirect Beach Tour 2020 since the beginning on July 17th, after they were previously called Road to Timmendorf.

Organization and spectators

This year's concept for the Comdirect Beach Tour and the German championship was developed by the DVV marketing agency DVS. Alexander Walkenhorst as the organizer of the Beach League provided the basis for this, as DVS Managing Director Volker Braun confirmed. According to its own statement, Walkenhorst also passed on the hygiene concept developed for the Beach League to the association. With regard to Timmendorfer Strand, it is still being discussed whether up to 700 spectators will be admitted to the Center Court. However, the side courts and the pier will be cordoned off.
