Career
society
Godín began his football career in his hometown at Estudiantes de Rosario . He then played in the youth teams of Defensor Sporting . From there he moved to Club Atlético Cerro in 2003 for a transfer fee of only 840 pesos , which at the time was about the equivalent of 37 US dollars , where he made his debut in the top Uruguayan league that same year. He played for the club - first as a striker and later as a central defender - from 2003 up to and including the 2005/06 season. During this time he has 39 games (five goals) in the Primera División in the 2003, 2004 and 2005/06 seasons. In 2006 he was signed by league rivals Nacional Montevideo . At the Bolsos he was used 26 times in the top division in the 2006/07 season (no goal).
After his strong performances in the Uruguayan league and in the Copa Libertadores , he came to Villarreal before the 2007/08 season to replace the Argentine Roberto Ayala , who had decided to move to Real Zaragoza . In the three years with the "yellow submarine" he made 91 appearances in the Primera División and hit the opposing goal net four times.
For the 2010/11 season he moved to Atlético Madrid for a transfer fee of around 8 million euros . Godín signed a five-year contract with the capital club. After the end of the 2018/19 season he will leave Atlético Madrid. Already in August 2010 he celebrated his first title win with Atlético by winning the UEFA Super Cup . This was followed by a triumph in the UEFA Europa League in 2011/12 . In the 2012/13 season he and his teammates won the UEFA Super Cup 2012 and later the Copa del Rey .
For the Madrilenians, he completed 87 games in the Liga BBVA in his first three seasons and scored three goals.
In May 2013, the European press knew that there was an interest on the part of FC Bayern Munich and Manchester City in the Uruguayan's commitment. However, Godín stayed with the Madrilenians and completed 34 other league games (four goals) in the 2013/14 season and was ten times in the Champions League (two goals). He won the national championship title with the Madrilenians that season. Atlético Madrid secured the title on the last day of the match with a 1-1 draw in the decisive game against their immediate rivals FC Barcelona , who, if they had won, would have become champions instead of the Madrilenians. Godín scored the equalizer in that game and secured his team the title.
In the 2014/15 season he was used 34 times (three goals) in the top Spanish league and nine times (one goal) in the Champions League. His club finished third in the Primera División. In the 2015/16 season he played in 31 first division matches (one goal) and twelve Champions League games (no goal). He also played a total of 18 games (three goals) in the Copa del Rey for the club by the end of the 2015/16 season . During the 2016/17 season he was used 31 times (three goals) in the top Spanish league and eleven times (no goal) in the Champions League.
On July 1, 2019, Godin signed a contract with Inter Milan .
National team
Godín had been a member of the Uruguayan U-20 team coached by Gustavo Ferrín at least since October 2004 . In 2005 he was a member of the Uruguayan squad that took part in the 2005 U-20 South American Championship in Colombia . On October 26, 2005, Godín made his debut for the Uruguayan national team in a friendly against Mexico . He also took part in the 2007 Copa America and three years later in the World Cup. At the 2010 World Cup , he reached fourth place as a regular with Uruguay. In 2011 he won the 2011 Copa America with the national team . He also took part in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup . At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he was again part of the Uruguayan squad. There he secured the third group match of the 2014 World Cup for Celeste with the 1-0 winner against Italy to make it into the round of 16. He was also part of the Uruguayan squad at the 2015 Copa America , which made it to the quarter-finals. The Copa America 2016 ended for the Uruguayan team, which was led through the tournament as captain by Godín, after the group stage.
Godín has so far completed 135 international matches , scoring eight goals. His last appearance for the time being is dated November 18, 2019, replacing Maxi Pereira as Uruguay's record national player since March 24, 2019.
