history

Settlement of Etna began in 1807 when the first settlers settled in the area. General John Crosby held the grand for the area. After him, the area was first named Crosbytown until it was organized on February 15, 1820 as a town under the name Etna. In some sources the name is initially given as Aetna. Originally, the area was Township No. 4, Second Range North of Waldo Patent (T4 R2 NWP) or Bowdoin College Grant . In 1826 part of the area was given to Plymouth and in 1866 to Carmel.

Interstate 95 , US Highway 2 and Maine State Route 69 run parallel to each other through Etna in a west-east direction . They are crossed by Maine State Route 143 .

The Cumberland Center – Bangor railway runs through Etna.
