action

Reed Richards and his fiancee Susan Storm just stuck in the wedding preparations, as everywhere happen in the world inexplicable events: As snow falls on the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, in the Suruga Bay in Japan, the water turned to stone, and in Los Angeles comes there was a total power failure for no apparent reason. Craters are also formed in various places, and a flying object is spotted, the silvery appearance of which cannot be determined. The US Army asks the scientist Reed for help, whereupon he develops a sensor with which the flying object can be located worldwide via satellite.

During Reed and Susan's wedding ceremony in New York City , the sensor sounds the alarm when the object flies directly over the city, causing a power outage. The wedding is called off and Susan's brother Johnny acts as a flying torch in pursuit of the object that turns out to be the Silver Surfer . Johnny is incapacitated by this above the clouds and passes out back to earth, but is able to reactivate his flame shortly before the impact and survives the fall. Through his contact with the Silver Surfer, Johnny's molecular structure was changed so that he can now swap forces with one of his colleagues simply by touching him.

It turns out that the unusual occurrences on earth were triggered by the cosmic energy of the silver surfer as he flew over it. When the surfer crossed Hassenstadt in Latveria, his energy had brought Doctor Doom, believed to be dead, to life.

Reed finds that the craters appear in a certain order and predicts when the next will appear in London . When they get there, the next crater is forming in the Thames in front of the London Eye , which threatens to collapse. The Fantastischen Vier can prevent this, but due to a recklessness of Johnny they do not look good during the action, so that the military is no longer sure whether the four are up to the task. In this situation, Doctor Doom in his civilian form as Victor von Doom succeeds in gaining the trust of the military. From now on, the four are obliged to work together with their archenemy to save the world together. After his awakening to life, Doom had sought contact with the Silver Surfer in Greenland's Russell Glacier, but was rejected by him with a burst of energy that healed him completely as a "side effect".

The next crater arises in the Carpathian Mountains (in the English original in the Black Forest ), where the plan is to separate the silver surfer with a tachyon pulse from his surfboard, which has been identified as his source of energy. Susan meets the surfer while activating one of the tracking devices. However, the military shoots at the two to incapacitate the surfer. The Silver Surfer protects Susan from the missiles, and she activates the last tracker. The plan succeeds and the now powerless surfer is brought to Siberia , where he is held captive and tortured by the military. The surfboard is also brought there, and Doom soon reveals his real motivation for the collaboration: he steals the surfboard and thereby gains even greater power than before.

In the meantime the Fantastischen Vier find out that the surfer is an inhabitant of an alien planet, whose destruction by the world destroyer Galactus could only be prevented because the silver surfer, as its herald, has committed himself to scout out other planets for him, the Galactus as his Can devour food. The surfboard then also serves as a transmitter that calls Galactus. Initially viewed as a threat, the Silver Surfer now turns out to be a tragic figure who only carries out his mission because of blackmail and finally takes the side of the Fantastic Four. Together, in the summoned Fantasticar , they chase Doom towards Southeast Asia.

When Doctor Doom finally tries to kill the Silver Surfer in Shanghai and hurls a spear at him, Susan intervenes with her force field, but her energy is not enough against the newfound powers of Doom, and the spear fatally hits Susan. Now Johnny goes all out and allows himself to unite all of the others' powers through his new ability. With these concentrated forces he succeeds in putting Doom out of action and separating him from the surfboard. The Silver Surfer takes his vehicle back, and with his regained powers he brings the dead Susan back to life.

The surfer has now decided never to serve his ruler Galactus again. He flies towards Galactus and destroys it by sacrificing himself in a gigantic explosion. Reed and Susan are finally able to successfully complete their wedding ceremony in Japan .

During the credits you see the apparently dead Silver Surfer again floating in space when he suddenly opens his eyes and his surfboard moves towards him again.

background

  • Comic book writer Stan Lee has a guest appearance in the film and plays himself in it as a rejected visitor to the wedding.
  • The silver surfer was animated with the help of a computer program specially developed for the film. • In the United States, the film received a PG rating , which means a low rating for an action film. Accordingly, children of all ages are allowed to watch the film there when accompanied by an adult. It is the first Marvel Comics film after Howard, from 1986, to receive this rating.
  • Production costs were estimated at around $ 130 million. The film grossed around $ 289 million in cinemas worldwide, including around $ 132 million in the United States.

  • The world premiere of the film was on June 12, 2007 in London. It was released in theaters on June 15, 2007 in the United States and on August 14, 2007 in Germany.

Reviews

  • The film was rated 36% on rottentomatoes.com. The consensus says that although the film is an improvement on its weak predecessor, it is nonetheless an immature, overly simple film that has little to offer beyond its special effects.
  • James Berardinelli described the film as "tiresome" and "incoherent". None of the actors could convince in their portrayal and give their character depth, and the special effects and action sequences are "soulless" and "unexciting". Overall, it is significant for him that the film, which claims to be a good comic adaptation, has already received PG approval.
  • Justin Chang wrote in Variety magazine that the film was "happy stupid" and "throwaway". The characters are even less clearly drawn than in the previous film.
  • The Lexicon of International Films says: “Trivial action and science fiction adventure in the predictable tracks of the genre, which nevertheless retains something of the old-fashioned charm of the Marvel Comics templates in its numerous effects from the computer. Solid 'commercial cinema' that clears out its role models of so many imposed claims. "
  • Sascha Keilholz says on critic.de that the plot and dialogues complement each other: "Sieve and wide-meshed, holey network on the one hand, clichéd phrases and banal things to the point of embarrassment on the other." with acting skills remains bound in the costume of the thing. "
