Forst ( listen ? / I ) is a municipality in the district of Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg . Audio file / audio sample

geography

Forst is located around three kilometers northwest of Bruchsal and has a direct border with this city. Apart from the village of the same name, no other villages belong to the community of Forst.

history

As finds from the Stone Age and Bronze Age prove, the present-day municipality of Forst was settled early on. The Roman era also left its mark here. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1161 in a document from Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa . In 1644 the village was destroyed as a result of the Thirty Years War . In 1803, Forst, which had previously belonged to the Speyer Monastery, was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Baden as part of the mediation process after the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss . Since 1939 Forst belonged to the district of Bruchsal , which was added to the district of Karlsruhe in 1973.

The community used to be called Forst bei Bruchsal . It is often known as Baden, meaning forest / Baden.

On March 31, 1988, an American F-16-C fighter plane crashed during a low-level exercise in Forster Hardtstrasse. Several houses were set on fire and badly damaged. The pilot (1st Lt. Tom E. Doyle) and a resident were killed. The accident became widely known in the media and led to protests against low-flying aircraft among the population, also because of the risk that a fighter plane could fall into the nuclear power plant in Phillipsburg, which is just a few minutes away.

coat of arms

Blazon : “In blue on a green shield base, the nimbly and golden crowned Saint Barbara in a white robe; holding a red tower in his right hand, pointing a golden sword downwards with his left hand. "

A coat of arms appeared for the first time in 1739 on a seal in the index of interest rates and slopes of the Johanniterkommende Bruchsal. It depicted a female figure in the Baroque style with a chalice and an elongated object, possibly a sword. As a recognizable figure of Saint Barbara, the coat of arms did not appear until 1746 and from 1775 on traditional seals on which the female figure held a tower and a sword in her hand. In 1907 the coat of arms was redesigned by the Generalbundesarchiv and has been used as an official seal by the municipality since 1911.

The coat of arms also adorns the entrance area of the town hall. St. Barbara is also the patron saint of the parish of St. Barbara Forst. In the Catholic parish church there is a statue of St. Barbara in the right aisle.

Town twinning

The community of Forst has maintained a community partnership with the city of Landsberg (Saalekreis) in Saxony-Anhalt since 1990 .

Culture and sights

Sports

Gymnastics club

The gymnastics club TV Forst includes various sports such as gymnastics, triathlon, athletics, handball, volleyball, indiaca and archery. The triathletes of the TV Forst organize the nationally known Heidesee-Triathlon BW every year. TV Forst is the operator of the so-called "Jahnhalle", which is located in the core of the community.

Soccer

The soccer club FC Germania is based in Forst. It was founded on April 7, 1909. The club colors are red and white. After relegation in summer 2018, the first team plays for the first time in the district class A Bruchsal and the perspective team in the district class B. The sports field on which the team plays and trains home games comprises 3 playing fields and a training field. One of the fields offers a grandstand and a circular track (Waldseestadion) as well as a booth for a stadium announcer. The site also has a club house, which was renovated in 2013.

Weightlifting

The AC Forst weightlifters were represented in the 1st Bundesliga.

Lakes and parks

Heidesee leisure park

The Heidesee leisure park is a swimming lake operated by the municipality. It is open over the bathing season and, in addition to the bathing facility, also offers a slide, volleyball fields, children's pool and a children's playground. In the immediate vicinity there is also a sauna and a restaurant, which are open all year round. The bathing area accessible to visitors on the western bank has a 3.5 hectare sandy beach, 12.5 hectare sunbathing lawns and is equipped with sanitary facilities. There are also six floating islands in the lake where visitors can take a break. There is also a non-swimmer zone that is around one meter deep. The bathing area is monitored during the opening times by employees of the community of Forst and by volunteers from the DLRG local group Forst. There are around 500 parking spaces available to visitors, but these are rarely sufficient during the high season, which is why adjacent meadows are mostly used as such.

Sight: This door serves no purpose, which is why it is often examined and / or photographed. Location: Heidesee Forst (Baden).

The lake was voted the listeners' favorite bathing lake on a morning show on Radio Regenbogen. Together with Radio Regenbogen, so-called “beach parties” were organized at Heidesee, at which artists like Nena also performed. In July 2016 the Open-Air-Party House am See took place at Heidesee.

Forest lake

To the west of the municipality is the forest lake. The approximately one kilometer long promenade is a popular path for walkers and those who do sports. There are also other hiking trails in the adjacent forest area that run directly past the lake. In the north of the lake there is a large play area with slides, table tennis tables and a half pipe.

Weindelsee

The Weindelsee in the northwest is not directly accessible to visitors. It borders on the industrial area of the community of Forst and is known, among other things, for the Seehotel Forst located on the shore.

Walthersee

The Walthersee, located in the south, belongs geographically to the municipality, but is located on the Stegwiesen industrial park in the neighboring town of Bruchsal. Many residents therefore do not assign the lake to the community of Forst. Among other things, it is used as a private bathing and fishing lake and is not open to the public. A nearby fitness center offers members the opportunity to swim in the lake via its own entrance.

Animal and bird park

The zoo and bird park has offered a wide range of different animal species since 1966. In addition to many species of birds, including flamingos, cranes and various types of owls, the zoo also offers more exotic animals such as monkeys and llamas. Several generous game reserves, a restaurant and a mini golf course complement the park to the north. The park is operated by the Tier- und Vogelpark Forst eV, founded in the same year

Buildings

The sights of the community include, among others

  • the baroque rectory from 1751
  • the church from 1887
  • the hunter's house from 1747
Parish Church of St. Barbara Forst

Parish church

The Catholic parish church of St. Barbara Forst is at the heart of the community. It replaced the old parish church, which was used from 1749 until the new church was built. The foundation stone of today's parish church was laid on October 22nd, 1882, the completion and inauguration took place on October 12th, 1887. At the inauguration, Archbishop Johann Christian Roos entered the three-aisled building in neo-renaissance style with the words "That's a cathedral!" over a church tower with a height of 56 meters. The church had a high altar until the renovation in 1960 . So that the pastor can celebrate Holy Mass in front of the parish, the choir room at the end of the central nave was converted and provided with an altar made of noble red Jura marble.

In addition to Holy Mass and other regular services in the Catholic parish, the church is also used for larger services in the Protestant parish, such as confirmations.

Hunter's House

The Jägerhaus, which lies to the west of the town center, was built as a stately Oberjägerhaus as early as 1747. It comprised two floors and a stable, which is known today as the "hunter's barrow". The building was bought by a cigar manufacturer in 1895 and sold to an upholstered furniture factory at the end of World War II. It was not until 1983 that the building was acquired and renovated by the municipality. Since then, it can be rented as a space for events, including for civil weddings, which are regularly held there.

There is a fountain in front of the building, the so-called "rabbit fountain". On it are several figures of rabbits, which is based on the local necropolis of the community, the "sand rabbits ". One of the figures suggests smoking a cigar, which is supposed to remind of the history of the building.

Regular events

Waldseefest

The Waldseefest arose from the former street festival in Forst, which has now been moved from the center of the village to the parking lot of the Waldseehalle. Associations and local innkeepers held a three-day festival there every year.

Oktoberfest

The traditional Oktoberfest of FC Germania Forst has been held annually on a September weekend since 2005. In partnership with the Hofbräuhaus Traunstein , visitors are offered Bavarian specialties and music on four consecutive days. The festival takes place in the parking lot of the Waldseehalle.

church

The parish of Forst forms a pastoral care unit with the neighboring village of Weiher to the north-east. Since 2015 the pastoral care unit has been merged with the pastoral care unit Ubstadt, which includes 3 localities. In addition to the church and the rectory, the parish also has other structures, such as the parish office and the parish center. The parish also runs two kindergartens and provides the space for a world shop . Young people can, for example, help with the altar boys, who regularly offer holiday leisure time.

It has been located in the building of a former bank behind the town hall in the center of Forst since June 16, 1991. Before that, a room in the "Lußhardt School" had been used since 1970, but in the long run it did not meet the requirements of a library.

Lußhardt Community School

There is also a primary and secondary school in Forst, which was merged with the school in the neighboring town of Hambrücken on August 1, 2014 to form the "Lußhardt Community School". In the 2013/2014 school year, around 400 students attended the former “Lußhardt School”. The school building in Forst has a school sports hall and a swimming pool, which are also used by local clubs.
