Contingent

On May 29, 2012, the final squad for the 2012 European Football Championship was named. The most experienced players were Giorgos Karagounis and Kostas Katsouranis , who were also used to win the 2004 title and the 2008 qualifying round. The 36-year-old Nikos Liberopoulos was surprisingly nominated, who had already announced his resignation from the national team in 2009. Not in the squad was Angelos Charisteas , who scored the decisive goal to win the title in 2004 and was instrumental in the victory in the last qualifying game.

Games of Greece

Preliminary round

Greece denied the preliminary round in Group A . Greece, as well as Russia and the Czech Republic, were drawn into the hosted Polish team. The record against the Czech Republic was positive before the EM with 1 win and 2 draws, the victory in the semifinals of the EM 2004 with the last silver goal brought the Greek team the first final. Against Poland the record was negative with 3 wins and 2 draws out of 10 defeats before the European Championship. Both have never met at a European Championship finals. Against Russia the record is negative with 1 win, 5 draws and 3 defeats before the EM. The last time they met in Piraeus was on November 11, 2011 and they parted 1: 1. At the last European Championship, Greece lost 1-0 to Russia in the preliminary round and four years earlier the 2-1 defeat was Greece's only defeat at the European Championship, but no longer relevant for reaching the quarter-finals.

All preliminary round matches of the Greek team took place in Poland .

Quarter finals

Greece reached the quarter-finals for the second time, in which they met Germany, the group winners of Group B. Before the EM there were eight games against Germany, three of which ended in a draw and five were lost. They last met on March 28, 2001 in Athens as part of the 2002 World Cup qualification. In the 2: 4, Nikos Liberopoulos , Giorgos Karagounis and Miroslav Klose , who scored the goal for the meanwhile 2: 3, were involved from the current EM squads .

Klose, who scored 3-1 in the meantime, and Liberopoulos were also used when they met again, Karagounis was suspended due to the second yellow card received in the game against Russia.

The Greek team played with a mourning ribbon, since the former national coach Alketas Panagoulias , with whom the European Championship finals were reached in 1980, died on June 18, 2012.
