The team qualified for the World Cup in Russia through the qualifying matches of the African Football Association CAF .

Games

Egypt, which has been coached by the Argentine Héctor Cúper since March 2015 , did not have to intervene until the second round and met Chad on both legs . After a 0-1 away defeat, the third round was reached with a 4-0 home win. This was played as a group stage and Egypt met in Group E against the Republic of the Congo , Ghana and Uganda . In the six resulting games, the Egyptian team won four, lost once and played once. The Egyptians scored at least one goal in all games except in the 1-0 defeat against Uganda. The Egyptians qualified as group winners on the penultimate matchday with a 2-1 win against the Republic of the Congo. The decisive goal came from a penalty converted by Mohamed Salah in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

A total of 33 players were used, 18 of whom were also in the squad for the 2017 African Cup of Nations , in which Egypt reached the final, including three goalkeepers. In the second round Ahmed El-Shenawy was in goal, in the first five games of the third round the now 44-year-old Essam El-Hadary and in the last game, which was no longer decisive for the qualification, Sherif Ekramy . In addition to him, four other players were only used in this game. The top scorer was Mohamed Salah with five goals, who together with Préjuce Nakoulma (Burkina Faso) was the top African scorer. A total of five players contributed at least one goal. This means that Egypt has the lowest scorer rate: only 15.2% of the players used were also successful scorer.

In addition, there were two defeats against the Soviet Olympic team in 1988 and a victory against the USSR B team in 1991. The Egyptians met Uruguayan teams twice: in 1963 they won 5-1 against a university team and in 2006 they lost 2-0 to the senior national team. There were four international matches against the Saudis recognized by FIFA, with two wins, a draw and a 5-1 defeat in the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup , as well as six other games not counted by FIFA, including a 13-0 win in first game 1961.
