General Dynamics is an American defense company . The company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange with the symbol GD . General Dynamics has annual sales of approximately US $ 32 billion. CEO is Phebe Novakovic .

history

The company was founded on February 7, 1899 under the name Electric Boat , on April 24, 1952 it was renamed General Dynamics . After the Canadair was purchased in 1946, the first expansion took place in 1953, when the company was merged with Convair . During the great success of the 1970s, the Canadair was sold back to the Canadian government.

In 1954, General Dynamics built the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus (SSN-571) , which made the first successful passage below the North Pole in 1958 .

Today the company consists of several branches. For example, Electric Boat is responsible for building submarines , while Bath Iron Works build surface warships. The civil aircraft manufacturer Gulfstream Aerospace has been part of the group since 1999 . A planned takeover of Newport News Shipbuilding failed due to resistance from the regulatory authorities.

In 2008, AxleTech was acquired from the Carlyle Group .

Alongside Boeing, General Dynamics is the most important manufacturer and developer of guided missiles in the USA.

General Dynamics European Land Systems

Armored vehicles have been manufactured in Europe since 2003 by the acquired companies, the Austrian Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeug , the Spanish Santa Bárbara Sistemas and the Swiss Mowag . The German General Dynamics European Land Systems-Germany GmbH (GDELS-G, formerly Eisenwerke Kaiserslautern ) is also part of it. Together they operate under the name General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS), the headquarters of the group is in Madrid .
