Gennady Viktorovich Komnatov
Gennadi Wiktorowitsch Komnatow ( Russian Геннадий Викторович Комнатов ; born September 18, 1949 in Schelannoje , Omsk ; † March 30, 1979 ibid) was a Soviet cyclist and Olympic champion in cycling .
Athletic career
Komnatov's greatest sporting success was the Olympic victory in the team time trial at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich with Valeri Jardy , Valeri Likhachev and Boris Schuchow . In the same season he had also won the Soviet championship in this discipline. In 1973 he won the national title again.
He was runner-up at the UCI Road World Championships three times in a row, in 1973 , 1974 and 1975 . He was the only driver of the Soviet team to take part in all three medal wins. In road races in 1976 in Denmark he won the Jylland Tour and a stage of the Tour of Morocco . Komnatow died in a traffic accident in 1979.
