The roots of the sport of ice hockey in Geretsried can be traced back to 1959. In the beginning, the teams of the sport were located as a department at TuS Geretsried , where in addition to the German championship in women's ice hockey, the senior team took part in several seasons in the 2nd Bundesliga . Since the summer of 2006, the teams have been part of the newly founded ESC River Rats Geretsried as an independent club , although the ice hockey department of TuS Geretsried has not yet been dissolved and the establishment of the club was therefore not classified as a spin-off, but as a new establishment.

Beginnings of ice hockey in Geretsried (1959 to 1963)
In 1959, when a natural ice rink was created in Roman Sternkopf's garden, the opportunity to play ice hockey was created in Geretsried, after players from Geretsried in Königsdorf had already participated in the local teams. The teams of TSV Königsdorf are still taking part in the Hobby Cup today. In 1961 the ice hockey department of TuS Geretsried was launched. On the fairground, today's bus parking lot at the "Heinz Schneider Kunsteisstadion", a 30 × 30 meter natural ice surface was built. In the following season 1962/63, the natural ice rink was built on Richard-Wagner-Straße, today's grass pitch at Karl-Lederer-Hauptschule, where the first friendly game of a Geretsried ice hockey team was played on December 5, 1962. The Geretsrieder were defeated by the ASV Dachau team with 2: 5 goals. The first victory followed a few weeks later with a 1-0 win against ESV Penzberg . In addition to the senior team, a school and youth team was founded in the 1962/63 season.
First sporting successes in TuS Geretsried (1963 to 1974)
In the 1963/64 season the senior team took part in the championship operation of the Bavarian Ice Sports Association for the first time. In the district class, which was the lowest division at that time, the 6th place in the table was reached. The school and youth teams played their first friendly matches before the teams were registered for championship play for the first time in the 1965/66 season. In the summer of 1966, the location of the natural ice rink had to be changed. The new venue for the home games was the guest area in Gartenberg next to today's artificial ice stadium. In the 1966/67 season, well-known coaches and players were signed for the first time for the first team of TuS Geretsried. Ex-national player Jakob Probst from EC Bad Tölz led the Geretsrieder team to the championship in the district class for the first time, but the two promotion games in the regional league were lost against the team of SC Eibsee - Grainau with 2: 7 and 0: 8.
Only in the 1969/70 season was the championship won again after the team had only become last in the district league in the previous season. This time he was promoted to the national league . The first major success could also be achieved in the junior division when the youth team took second place in the table in their league in 1970. One season later, 1970/71, the juniors also won the Group B championship for the first time and came third at the Bavarian Championships for natural ice clubs. The first Bavarian championship was brought to Geretsried in the 1971/72 season, when the juniors won the group championship and became Bavarian champions for the first time on natural ice. This title was then successfully defended in the following 1972/73 season.
For the 1972/73 season TuS Geretsried signed Ladislav Oljenik , ex-national player of Czechoslovakia and coach of EC Bad Tölz , who also partially supervised the training of the Geretsried team. At the end of the season, the club took sixth place in the national league. There was an enormous boost in Geretsried ice hockey, both in senior and young talent, with the construction of the artificial ice stadium in 1973, which was inaugurated on December 23 with the championship game against TSV Schliersee (final score 3: 3). The season 1973/74 ended the TuS as first table of the regional league and rose for the first time in the Regionalliga Süd . Thanks to the artificial ice rink, the ice sports department was very popular. In addition to the establishment of a new Bambini team, the student team was brought back to life.
First promotion to the league (1974 to 1983)
The first year in the Regionalliga ended with sixth place in the table. A highlight was the game in Schwenningen , where TuS unexpectedly won 5-4 in front of a record crowd of 2,500 spectators. In the 1975/76 season , the team reached third place, which at the same time entitled to promotion to the league due to the increase in the 2nd Bundesliga . As in the previous year, juniors and schoolchildren played championship games, while the Bambini only played friendly games. With 12:51 points and a goal difference of 196: 213, the senior team did not get beyond the last place in the league in the 1976/77 season , so the club had to relegate back to the Regionalliga Süd.
With the experiences from the league year it went into the season 1977/78 , for which the course had been set early. Helmut Eberhardt was hired as player- coach. In addition to Siegfried Kinkal , the trainer's brother, Sepp Eberhardt , also moved from EC Bad Tölz to Geretsried. In addition, Dave Snyder was the first time an ice hockey player from overseas was in the squad. At the end of the preliminary round, TuS was in second place in the Regional League South. In the promotion round to the league , the first place in the table was reached, for which the foundation stone was laid in the local derby in Bad Tölz in front of 1,000 spectators in the game against SC Reichersbeuren . With two victories against GSV Moers , the German Regional League Championship could be celebrated at the end of the season . After renewed promotion to the Oberliga Süd secured the TuS Geretsried after tenth place in the qualifying round and a victory over EV Bad Wörishofen in the relegation round relegation in the Oberliga season 1978/79 . The junior division had meanwhile grown to over 60 active players.
Despite disputes in the senior team, relegation was achieved again in the following season . In the youth field, a junior team was also registered for the first time. Before the 1980/81 season , the ice rink was covered. Completion was delayed, however, so that regular training and match operations were initially not possible and the new coach Hans Rothkirch's training had to be partially carried out in the football stadium instead of on ice. In addition, the first championship games in the major league had to be played away, which led to a series of defeats. At the end of the season the TuS occupied the last place in the table. The league was topped up by association decision, so that relegation was prevented at the green table. For the first time in Geretsried's ice hockey history, more than 100 players were active in the youth field. The juniors already played in class II, the youth team rose to class II, the students became champions of class II and won their relegation games against Rosenheim and were thus able to play for the German championship. The boys and the small school students also played in class II. In addition, a small school team took part in the games.
In the 1981/82 season the TuS signed well-known newcomers with Brian Ashton , Martin Dranger, Willi Feierabend, Sepp Jäger, Volker Müller, Johann “Hupa” Eimansberger and Toni Pohl . Due to the attractive style of play, the 1000 visitor mark was exceeded in series. However, promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga was missed. On the other hand, the juniors, who were promoted back to class II after an interlude in class III, and the youth team, who managed to move up to the highest junior league, celebrated a promotion. In the following season the seniors reached the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga with Hans Rothkirch , where the athletic promotion was again missed.
TuS Geretsried in the 2nd Bundesliga (1983 to 1985)
With the decision to split the 2nd Bundesliga into north and south, TuS Geretsried accepted the offer to play in this league in 1983/84 . For the first time in the young Geretsried ice hockey history, there were local derbies in championship matches: In front of over 3,400 visitors, the team managed a respectable 2: 4 at their first encounter with EC Bad Tölz . In the second leg, 4,800 spectators saw a 7: 5 success for TuS. With a first place in the qualifying round, the team secured relegation. For the first time in many years, no junior team could be reported due to a lack of players. Therefore, the club decided to set up a 1b team, which immediately made it to the Bayern League . In the 1984/85 season , the senior team could no longer build on the good performance of the previous year. The new head coach Richard Piechutta was dismissed in November 1984 and replaced by Gerhard Herrmann . At the end of the season, the team took the last place in the table by a clear margin. The 1b team, however, achieved the participation in the promotion round to the Regionalliga Süd in the Bayernliga , where the athletic promotion was successful.
New start and foundation of the women's team (1985 to 1994)
In the summer of 1985, the department management decided to withdraw the first team that should have played in the Oberliga Süd. The successful 1b team with almost exclusively local players took their place in the Regionalliga Süd. Franz Neumair was hired as the new trainer . There followed two years in the Regionalliga Süd, before the team reached promotion to the league again in the 1986/87 season . One of the most important players of this time was the crowd favorite Troy Thrun. In the course of the 1986/87 season, a women's team was also founded.
In the season 1987/88 sparked Peter Kathan Franz Neumair from as head coach. In the following years TuS Geretsried was able to establish itself in the Oberliga Süd. Shortly before the start of the relegation round of the 1989/90 season , coach Kathan was replaced by Horst Valasek and Gerhard Herrmann. The junior teams took another step upwards: in the 1987/88 season all teams except the juniors played in the top Bavarian league. The small school students also won the Bavarian Championship for the first time. In the 1990/91 season , the first team took third place in the Oberliga Süd and also won the Bayern Cup, which was played for the first time in front of over 2,000 spectators in the Geretsrieder artificial ice stadium against SC Memmingen .
The following year TuS won the Bayern Cup again, this time with a 6-2 away win at Heilbronner EC , and finished the championship round of the Oberliga-Süd as first in the table. In the games for the German Oberliga Championship , the home game against ETC Timmendorfer Strand was won 6: 5. The second leg at the Baltic Sea was clearly lost with 12-2 goals, so that Timmendorf won the championship thanks to the better goal difference. Due to restructuring in the DEB area, however, there was no promoter this season. The juniors were third in the main round of class A and remained undefeated in the games to remain in the division. The youth team won the Bavarian runner-up and qualified for the final round of the German championship. The pupils were also able to qualify for the final round of the German championship and took fourth place in the table.
In the 1992/93 season , the senior team only finished twelfth in the league, but the team was able to secure relegation in the qualifying round. There was also a change of coach during the season: Alfred Neidhart took over the coaching position from Horst Valasek and Gerhard Herrmann after disputes within the team. The junior team failed in the promotion round to the junior Bundesliga, the youth occupied a midfield position, but was able to reach the final round of the German championship again. The student team that won the Bavarian championship and came third in the German championship was successful. Meanwhile, the women established themselves in the German women's ice hockey Bundesliga .
The first team secured the class again the following year by finishing second in the qualifying round. At the beginning of January, coach Alfred Neidhart was replaced by Hans Rothkirch. The juniors secured third place in the table at the games for the Bavarian Class A championship and in the qualifying round for the junior Bundesliga. The youth again reached the final round of the German championship, and the students were relegated to class B for the first time in years. De Knaben reached fourth place in the highest Bavarian league. In the meantime, the number of active young players was between 180 and 200 young people. The women's team Moskitos first won the Bavarian, then the South German and ultimately even the German championship .
Successes with women, relegation of men (1994 to 2001)
With the introduction of the German Ice Hockey League as the new upper house and the associated restructuring of the league system, TuS Geretsried was divided into the new second-class first division for the 1994/95 season . There the team under coach Josef Capla and the nickname "River Rats" could only secure the class stay with a third place in the qualifying round. More successful, however, were the juniors who won the Bavarian championship and took second place in the qualifying round for the junior Bundesliga, which entitles them to promotion to the top division. The youth secured their class stay in the Bayernliga, the school team won the championship of the state league and thus the promotion to the Bavarian league. The boys were runner-up in Bavaria, the youngsters took first place in their group, as did the youngsters who came out on top in all tournaments. The Geretsrieder Andreas Morczinietz and Marco Flügel won the silver medal with the German U18 national team at the European Championships in April 1995.
In the 1995/96 season , the TuS team, with an average age of 22.7 years, secured relegation in the relegation round of the 1st League South, which was renamed the "Hacker-Pschorr-Liga". The juniors were also able to secure their membership in the junior league via the promotion round, as were the youth and students in the Bayern league. Meanwhile, the women's team "Moskitos" took third place in the German championship . The 1996/97 season was marked by the " Bosman judgment ". While four EU players were allowed to play in addition to the two contingent players, considerable economic problems arose at TuS Geretsried due to the elimination of training and further training compensation. After a failed start to the season, Michael Wanner and Gerhard Herrmann replaced the coaching duo Mahood / Haubennestel. Nevertheless, at the end of the season, the team was relegated to the 2nd League South after the decisive play-down game against EV Regensburg was lost after a shootout. Even the juniors did not manage to stay in the junior Bundesliga. In return, the youth made it to the Youth Bundesliga South, while the students qualified for the German championship. The boys also became Bavarian champions again.
In the 1997/98 season , the senior team reached fourth place in the 2nd division south, but missed the return to the 1st division after a sixth place in the promotion round. The junior team was relegated to the national league for the first time in many years. On the other hand, the youth team, which took fourth place in the table in the Bundesliga South and qualified for the final round of the German championship, was more successful. The students finished in midfield in the Bayern League and the qualifying round for the German championship, the boys came third in the German championships. In the 1998/99 season , the men took only sixth place in the table and missed the return to the second division in the promotion round with the last place in the table. Meanwhile, the junior team managed to return to the Bayern League.
For the women, the final tournament for the German championship took place in the Geretsrieder artificial ice stadium for the first time this season . The mosquitoes had finished the season as leader of the table in front of the Mannheim ERC and thus went into the tournament as favorites. In the final, however, the team lost to the Mannheimers.
Before the 1999/00 regional league season , the first men's team was spun off from the club and a GmbH was founded. A cooperation agreement was agreed between the GmbH and the association. The coaching position at the Riverrats was taken over by Horst Valasek, under whose leadership the team secured second place behind ESV Kaufbeuren in the Regionalliga Süd. It was followed by the promotion round to the league , in which the Riverrats could occupy seventh place after twenty game days. With the exception of the juniors, who had to relegate from the junior Bundesliga, all other teams managed to stay up in the junior division. The women's team "Moskitos" won the German runner-up again. In the 2000/01 season , the team again reached the final of the German championship, but lost to TV Kornwestheim there . In the summer of 2001, the "mosquitoes" were finally disbanded while the players switched to the newly founded women's team of SC Riessersee . The game permit granted to her by the DEB for the 2001/02 season resulted in a settlement procedure before the DEB arbitration tribunal.
Dissolution of the GmbH and new beginning (2001 to 2006)
2001 was the first time a second team was reported at TuS, which was able to prevail in the Bavarian regional league against the second teams of EC Bad Tölz and SC Riessersee and was promoted to the Bavarian regional league. In the 2002/03 season, the second team finally achieved promotion to the Bayern League . In the spring of 2003, the Riverrats organizing GmbH returned the license for the major league to the ice sports department of the TuS, but the conditions for the license could no longer be achieved, whereupon the game was stopped.
The previous second became the first team and continued to play in the Bavarian Ice Hockey League. There the team finished third in the 2004/05 season.

The previous members of the ice sports department of TuS Geretsried founded the new club ESC Riverrats Geretsried in the spring of 2006 , whereupon the ice hockey department of TuS was inactive, but not dissolved. In the 2006/07 season, the senior team reached the championship in the sixth-class district league group south and on February 4, 2007, against their direct competitor Bad Aibling, achieved promotion to the Bavarian regional league . The juniors took last place in the Bayernliga and had to relegate to the state league.
In the following season, the senior team reached fourth place in the preliminary round of the Landesliga Bayern Süd and thus missed participation in the play-offs. In the relegation round, the ESC was able to secure relegation early on and finished in second place in the end. After only one year in the regional league, the juniors returned to the Bayernliga with a first place. In the 2008/09 season, the ESC seniors reached the promotion round in their last preliminary round match against SC Reichersbeuren, who had been in fourth place, where the team just qualified for the play-offs. In the championship group A, the senior team took fifth place. Robert Morczinietz resigned as a trainer for professional reasons. He was succeeded by Peter Holdschik, who was already playing in Geretsried. The junior team also managed to stay in the Bayernliga with a sixth place.
In the summer of 2009, the ESC agreed to cooperate with the ESC Munich . The senior team started the national league season with the new coach Peter Holdschik. The previously questionable stadium situation was clarified by signing a lease agreement with the city until 2020. This pays the ESC 50,000 euros annually as a subsidy for the operation of the stadium, whereby the ESC as an eV operates the sports facility all year round. The junior team continues to play in the Bayernliga after last year's relegation. In addition to the senior and junior teams, the women's ice hockey team Octopussies , which is organized as a hobby, has been playing for the Riverrats since 2009 . In addition, the Intersport Utzinger HobbyCup is played in the hobby area in the Geretsried region and friendship tournaments are held by the youth department in various age groups. The "Heinz Schneider Boys' Tournament" and the "Idea Coffee Small Schoolchildren Tournament" have been held for over ten years.
In the spring of 2010, the previous trainer Peter Holdschik resigned for professional reasons. Successor was Sebastian Wanner, who had been active as a player at ESC for 3 years and ended his career as the best point defender in the club's history. The senior team competed in the Landesliga Süd-West.
The 2010/11 season was the most successful so far for ESC Geretsried. After the 28th matchday, the Riverrats took third place and even had the chance of a promotion place until the penultimate matchday. Ultimately, however, Waldkraiburg and Schongau passed. With 21 wins, two draws and five defeats, the team was able to improve some club records and, despite several seriously injured players, celebrate 12 wins in a row and remain unbeaten in 14 games in a row. The new coach Sebastian Wanner was able to shape the young team into a championship candidate despite the many failures. The juniors could not achieve a renewed promotion to the Bayernliga and stay in the state league for another year. Since the 2015/16 season Geretsried has been back in the Bayernliga / 4. League.

Venues
Initially, the Geretsried teams played their home games on various natural ice rinks before the Heinz Schneider Ice Stadium was opened in 1973 . This was covered in 1980 and last renovated in 2006. It currently has a capacity of 3,000 seats, including 600 seats and 100 VIP seats. Since the dissolution of the ice hockey department of TuS Geretsried, it has been operated by the ESC River Council.
Others
The River Rats always run charity campaigns , including a Teddy Bear Toss , where fans threw plush toys onto the ice surface. These were then given to an aid organization.
