Culture and sights
Sister churches
The sister churches ( Norwegian Søsterkirkene ) are located in Granavollen and date from the 12th century. According to local accounts, they were built by two sisters who were so divided that they could no longer go to the same church. The larger of the two churches is the Nikolaikirken , a three-aisled basilica whose origins date back to 1150. It can accommodate about 250 people and was the seat of the parish of Hadeland. The smaller of the two churches, the Mariakirken , was originally built as a parish or monastery church. Romanesque and Gothic elements can be found in the single-nave church, which was built in 1150. In 1813 the church burned down completely and was then rebuilt until 1859. Today it offers space for 150 people. In the southeastern part of the cemetery attached to the churches there is an old medieval tower. The use of the Klokketarnet is no longer known today. It could have been used as a bell tower, as its name suggests, or as an escape and protection tower. In the cemetery there is also the grave of the poet and journalist Aasmund Olafsson Vinje , which is decorated with a bust by the sculptor Brynjulf Bergslien .
The Granavollen rune stone (N63) stands behind the Nikolaikirken.
