Gravina in Puglia (formerly Gravina in Apulia ; Latin Silvium , Greek Σιλούϊον ) is a southern Italian city with 43,578 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Bari ; it is located on the river of the same name in the western Murgia in Apulia . Gravina is the administrative seat of the Parco Nazionale dell'Alta Murgia .
history
The city was founded by the Greeks at the time of the colonization of Magna Graecias in the hinterland as a polis with minting rights. Diodorus writes that the Romans took them from the Samnites during the 3rd Samnite War (305 BC or 306 BC). Strabo mentions it as a borderline point from Peuketien and Pliny the Elder lists its name under the cities of Apulia. The Via Appia from Rome to Brindisi ran through the town. Later Gravina were ruled by the Byzantines , Lombards and the North African Muslims.
At the time of the Normans (who called the place Garagnone or Garaynone ) and the kings of the House of Anjou , Gravina was the seat of a county. The counts came from the Gravina family and from around 1420 to 1816 from the Orsini family , who were elevated to dukes of Gravina in 1436. In 1649 Pope Benedict XIII was here . born as Pietro Francesco Orsini.
Attractions
- Gravina Cathedral (11th-12th centuries), built by the Normans in Romanesque style. It was destroyed by fire and earthquake in the middle of the 15th century. It houses an arm of Thomas Becket , which Bishop Roberto received in 1179, as a relic .

- Pietro Francesco Orsini (* February 2, 1649 in Gravina in Puglia, † February 21, 1730 in Rome) was Archbishop of Manfredonia from 1675 , from 1680 also Bishop of Cesena and from 1686 finally Archbishop of Benevento . After a 70 day conclave , he was elected Pope by the cardinals on May 29, 1724 .
