The Kastrioti or Kastriota (also Kastrati ; Albanian Pl. Kastriotët ; Italian Castriota ) were an Albanian noble family in the Middle Ages that belonged to the tribe of the Southern Miridites . They originally come from the Mati region in northern Albania , near today's border with Montenegro and Kosovo . The aristocratic family was believed to be Roman Catholic . She had good relations with the Republic of Venice , the Kingdom of Naples and the papacy of that time . The Kastrioti line represented many princes who ruled over lands that now belong to the modern states of Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro. The descendants of the Castriota ruled over lands and duchies in southern Italy too .

etymology

The word Kastrioti is derived from Kastrati or Kastri , a place name in Has in northern Albania, where the noble family originated. In 1605 a chronicler from Ragusa named Pietro Luccari mentions a Gjon Kastrioti who is lord of Kruja and whose family comes from the village of Kastrati, which is under the jurisdiction of Has and is located near the river Drillon (today Drin).

history

The name Kastrioti is mentioned for the first time in a document from 1368, which contains an oath of the Bulgarian Lord of Valona , Alexander Komnenus Asen . It names a Kastrioti as lord of Kanina of the Principality of Kastrioti . The fact that a Kastrioti ruled over Kanina testifies to the close family ties at that time. It is possible that this castriot was a member of the Dukagjin house , which at that time ruled several fortresses in medieval Albania .

In 1389 a member of the Kastrioti family (either called Pal or Gjergj) was recorded as commander of an Albanian army next to a Theodor Muzaka II at his side at the Battle of the Blackbird Field. He is said to have ruled over an area from Has to the Mat River .

Gjon Kastrioti II succeeded his father (Pal or Gjergj Kastrioti, not to be confused with Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg ) as lord of the Matia region . The rule extended far north over Shkodra and Lezha to Bosnia . In a Venetian document from 1413, Gjon is mentioned as dominus partium bosniae . In 1395 he was able to wrest the fortress of Kruja from the Thopia family . Other fortresses also came into his possession, such as Petrela , Svetigrad , Varosh (east of Burrel ) and Gur i Bardhë (village in Mat district ).

Georg Kastriota Skanderbeg united the princes of today's northern Albania and southern Montenegro to form the League of Lezha and fought with them against the Ottoman Empire . He became famous all over Europe during his lifetime. The then Pope Pius II honored him with the title Athleta Christi . His successful fight against the Ottomans not only earned him the status of the national hero of Albania, but also made him the subject of numerous books, dramas and operas. After his death, his descendants fled to southern Italy (including Naples ), where they were able to occupy various offices in the nobility and clergy .
