Gustavo Baz Prada (born January 31, 1894 in Tlalnepantla , † October 12, 1987 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican surgeon and obstetrician , politician and rector of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Among other things, he was twice governor of the state of México as well as Senator and Secretario de Salubridad y Asistencia (Minister of Health).

Life

Baz started school in the Liceo Fournier in Mexico City in 1900 . After his father's death, the family moved to Guadalupe , Zacatecas state , where he finished elementary school. In 1908 he moved to the " Escuela Normal de Guadalajara ", then in 1912 to the Instituto Científico y Literario de Toluca . With a scholarship from the Colegio Médico Militar , he began his medical training as Sargento . From 1914 he took an active part in the Mexican Revolution . After the implementation of the Ayala plan , he was promoted to governor of the state of México and brigadier general on December 15, 1914 for the first time . After the victory of the constitutional forces in this region under the command of General Pablo González Garza , he resigned the post of governor on October 14, 1915, renounced his rank as brigadier general in 1916 and continued his medical training. In 1920 he was approved as a surgeon and obstetrician by the Escuela de Medicina . On October 11, 1935, he became director of the Escuela Nacional de Medicina and the Escuela Médico Militar . In the same year he also became president of the Academia Nacional de Medicina . On June 21, 1938 he became rector of the UNAM. On December 1, 1940, he was appointed Secretario de Salubridad y Asistencia by President Manuel Ávila Camacho and two days later he handed over the post of rector at the UNAM to his successor. During his tenure, which ended on December 30, 1946, he received, among other things, an honorary doctorate from the UNAM. As a candidate for the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), he was re-elected governor of the state of México on September 16, 1957 until 1963. From 1976 to 1982 he was Senator of the Republic of Mexico and was awarded the Medalla Belisario Domínguez del Senado de la República in 1978 .
