İsmail Hakkı Karadayı

İsmail Hakkı Karadayı (* 1932 in Çankırı , Çankırı Province ; † May 26, 2020 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish general who was last chief of the general staff ( Genelkurmay Başkanı ) of the Turkish armed forces ( Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri ) from 1994 to 1998 .

Life

After attending the military school ( Harp Okulu ) he graduated from the air defense school ( Uçaksavar Okulu ) between 1951 and 1953 and then found uses in various units of the artillery . In 1963 he first attended the Military Academy ( Harp Akademisi ) and in 1967 the Academy of Armed Forces ( Silahlı Kuvetler Akademisi ). He then worked as chief of staff, lecturer at the military academy and as a military attaché in the Middle East . This was followed by assignments as a transport officer of a regiment and as section chief for principles and planning in the General Staff of Turkey .

After graduating from the Academy for National Security ( Milli Güvenlik Akademisi ) in 1975 , he was promoted to Brigadier General in 1977 and appointed Deputy Chief of the Army Office before becoming the commander of a motorized infantry brigade. After his promotion to major general in 1981, he became the commander of a division in Northern Cyprus and was then head of the personnel department in the staff of the land forces ( Türk Kara Kuvetleri ) between 1983 and 1985 . In 1985 Karadayı was promoted to lieutenant general and as such he was commanding general of various corps in the following years . His last position was from August 30, 1989 to December 31, 1990, Chief of Staff of the Land Forces.

On January 1, 1991 he was promoted to general and appointed as the successor to Muhittin Fisunoğlu as commander in chief of the 1st Army . On August 30, 1993 he succeeded General Muhittin Fisunoğlu again, this time as commander in chief of the land forces.

A year later, on August 30, 1994, he succeeded General Doğan Güreş as Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces. During this time the DPK-PUK conflict between the Democratic Party of Kurdistan ( Partîya Demokrata Kurdistanê ) of Masud Barzani and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan ( Yaketi Niştimanî Kurdistân ) of Jalal Talabani occurred . After four years in office, he was on 30 August 1998 in retirement staggered and General Hüseyin Kıvrıkoğlu replaced that previously was also supreme commander of the land forces.

During his long military career, he has received several awards, including the Legion of Merit and the command of the Legion of Honor . He is also a member of the board of trustees of Haliç Üniversitesi in Istanbul, founded in 1998, and a member of the academic council of Mustafa Kemal Üniversitesi in Hatay, founded in 1992 .

On January 3, 2013, Karadayı was arrested for alleged involvement in the 1997 military coup .
