Hakuba ( Japanese 白馬 村 , - mura ; literally: "white horse") is a village in the Japanese prefecture of Nagano in the district of Kitaazumi .
Hakuba is a largely sprawled village between the ski resorts of HappoOne, Gooryu 47 and Iwatake. It is almost exclusively tourist-oriented and depends on the ski facilities.
Hakuba is the birthplace of Japanese skiing. In winter the snow is several meters high; the winter sports season lasts until April. Hakuba became famous when the 1998 Winter Olympics were held in Nagano. At that time, the village organized, among other things, ski jumping on the Hakuba ski jumps and competitions in the alpine disciplines.
Part of the old road that used to transport salt from the northern sea into the interior runs through the Hakuba valley.
