Reedtz held a secretariat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1831 to 1843, which gave him some recognition. In 1845 he completely withdrew from politics and diplomacy in order to devote himself entirely to science.

In 1850 he returned to politics and diplomacy under Count Moltke . He became Foreign Minister of Denmark and negotiated the peace of July 2, 1850 alongside Pechlin . On December 20, 1851, he resigned from the cabinet. He died on his estate.
