Jonathan Tanner "JT" Miller (born March 14, 1993 in East Palestine , Ohio ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League since June 2019 . Previously, the right winger ran for the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning .
Career
Miller first played with the Pittsburgh Hornets in the junior division before he switched to the youth development program of the US Ice Hockey Association USA Hockey in the summer of 2009 , although he was 93rd in the fifth round of the OHL Priority Selection 2009 by the Plymouth Whalers from Ontario Hockey League had been selected. There the striker played in the following two years both in the U17 and U18 national teams and for another association team in the United States Hockey League . Even after the 2009/10 season, Miller stayed there, although he was drawn in the USHL draft in the 21st round in 302nd place by the Youngstown Phantoms .
After the 2010/11 season, the next draft election took place when the attacker in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft was selected 15th in the first round by the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League . The Rangers signed Miller directly in late July 2011 and ordered him to join the Plymouth Whalers in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) just a few days later . After a year in the OHL and a year and a half with the former Rangers farm team in the AHL, the Connecticut Whale , Miller played alternately for the Rangers and their current farm team Hartford Wolf Pack from 2013 to 2015 . At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, however, he established himself in the NHL squad and played all 82 regular season games during this season, becoming the team's fifth-best scorer with 43 points.
In February 2018 Miller and Ryan McDonagh were handed over to the Tampa Bay Lightning for the trade deadline . In return, the Rangers Wladislaw Namestnikow , the young players Libor Hájek and Brett Howden received a first-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and another second-round vote. The latter should become one for the first draft round, provided the Lightning win the Stanley Cup in the next two years . Miller also signed a new five-year contract in Tampa in June 2018, which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 5.25 million.
In June 2019, however, the Lightning gave it to the Vancouver Canucks and in return received Marek Mazanec , a conditional first-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2020 and a third-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2019 . The right to vote in the first round will be postponed by one year if the Canucks miss the playoffs of the 2019/20 season.
International
Miller first represented the United States at the 2010 World U-17 Hockey Challenge , where he won the gold medal with the team. At the same time he was together with the Finn Joel Armia , the Russian Alexander Chochlatschow and the Swede Mika Zibanejad the top scorer of the competition. Another gold medal followed at the U18 Junior World Championship in 2011 . With twelve scorer points, the striker played a key role as the team's top scorer. At the U20 Junior World Championship in 2012 , he finished seventh with the team.
