Johannes Evangelist Cardinal Haller (born April 30, 1825 in St. Martin in Passeier , South Tyrol , † May 5, 1900 ) was Cardinal and Archbishop of Salzburg .

Life

Johann Haller was born in 1825 as the son of the farmer Johann Haller and his wife Anna, b. Sprenger from Ratschings , born on the Greinwaldhof in Ausserried near Saltaus in Passeier ( South Tyrol ). He went to school in Merano and Innsbruck and studied philosophy and theology at the seminary in Trento . On May 21, 1848 he was ordained a priest in Trento . He later received a doctorate in theology and worked as a chaplain and cooperator in pastoral care until 1860 . In 1860 he became a chaplain in the Benedictine monastery in Säben and later pastor of Laion at the entrance to Val Gardena . In 1871 he became Canon in Trient and Provikar for the German-speaking part of the Diocese of Trento .

On August 14, 1874, Johannes Evangelist Haller was appointed titular bishop of Adraa , auxiliary bishop and coadjutor of the prince-bishop of Trento, Benedikt Riccabona of Reichenfels (1807-1879), who had ruled since 1861 . The episcopal ordination donated him on 14 October 1874 in Salzburg Archbishop Maximilian Joseph of Tarnóczy ; Co-consecrator was Johannes Jakub della Bona , auxiliary bishop in Salzburg, presbyter assistant was Joseph Mooslechner , dean of the cathedral chapter. After the death of his bishop, Haller was appointed vicar capitular in Trient and on December 20, 1880, auxiliary bishop in Salzburg, where he was appointed provost of the cathedral . The Salzburg Cathedral Chapter elected Haller on May 20, 1890 as Archbishop of Salzburg and Primate Germaniae . Pope Leo XIII. confirmed the election on June 26, 1890, it rose in the consistory of 29 November 1895, Cardinal and appointed Haller on June 25, 1896 Cardinal Priest with the titular church of San Bartolomeo all'Isola .

Since 1889 he was an honorary member of the Catholic student association KÖStV Austria Vienna .

Haller earned services for the revision of the Austrian catechism and the establishment of a Catholic university in Salzburg. Archbishop Haller was buried in the crypt of Salzburg Cathedral .
