Joan Llaneras Roselló (born May 17, 1969 in Porreres ) is a former Spanish cyclist and two-time Olympic champion. With four Olympic and twelve world champion medals, he is the most successful Spanish cyclist to date (as of 2016). His special disciplines were points and two-man team driving .
Athletic career
Joan Llaneras started his cycling career on the street . 1992 to 1993 and 1995 he drove for the ONCE team . In 1993 he decided a stage of the Ruta del Sol for himself. Then he put his focus on the railway .
1996 Llaneras became world champion in points race for the first time . He repeated this title win in 1998 and 2000 . He was also runner- up in 2003 and won a bronze medal in this discipline in 1997 and 2005 . At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 he was Olympic champion in points and four years later won the silver medal in this discipline.
At the Madison , Joan Llaneras became world champion for the first time in 1997 with Miguel Alzamora . His standard partner in the following years, however, was Isaac Gálvez . With him he became world champion in 1999 and 2006 and vice world champion in 2000 and 2001 . In 2006 Llaneras competed with Gálvez in the six-day race in Ghent , in which his partner Gálvez died of a fall. Llaneras then considered ending his cycling career, but started again in 2007.
Before the 2008 Olympics , Llaneras announced his subsequent retirement from cycling. At these games he won two medals, a gold one in the points race and a silver one together with Toni Tauler in the two-man team race. At the graduation ceremony he was the standard bearer of the Spanish team. After his official retirement from cycling, he started again in the spring of 2009 in the six-day race in Rotterdam , which he won together with Peter Schep .
Since completing his active career, Llaneras has been running the Escuela de Ciclismo Joan Llaneras in Mallorca and is also active as a trainer for children and young people in the Palma Arena .
Honors
Joan Llaneras has received numerous honors and awards over the course of his more than 20-year cycling career, including the Orden Olímpica del COE (1997), the Premio Don Felipe de Borbón and the Real Orden al Mérito Deportivo in three different forms. In 2011 he was honored with the highest sports award in the Balearic Islands , the Cornelius Atticus .
