On September 10, 1926, this arrondissement was dissolved and the canton came to the arrondissement of Saint-Flour. From 1801 to 2015, fifteen municipalities belonged to the canton of Murat. The canton was enlarged on March 22, 2015 as part of the reorganization of the cantons. A further twelve municipalities from other cantons were added to the 15 in the old canton of Murat, namely from the cantons of Allanche (11 municipalities) and Saint-Flour-Sud (1 municipality).
