The HK Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk ( Russian ХК Торпедо Усть-Каменогорск ) is an ice hockey team from the Kazakh town of Öskemen (Russian Ust-Kamenogorsk ). The club was founded in 1955 and, in addition to the Kazakh championship , has been participating in the Russian championship since the 1960s. The team plays in the Vysschaya Hockey League , the second highest Russian league.
The city-based Kazakh mining company Kazzinc acted as sponsor of the team until 2015 .
history
The association was founded in 1955 in what was then Ust-Kamenogorsk . 1964 Torpedo got a place in the second division. In the 1966/67 season, the team finished second behind Avtomobilist Sverdlovsk and had to compete in the relegation round for promotion to the elite class against Metallurg Novokuznetsk and Torpedo Minsk . Eventually Metallurg won the round and Ust-Kamenogorsk stayed in the second division. In the 1976/77 season, the team was penultimate and thus rose to the third division. After three years, Torpedo made it to the second Soviet division in the 1979/80 season. In the 1986/87 season , the team rose to the highest league in the Soviet Union, but from the Torpedo was relegated the next season. In the following season 1988/89 , the team managed to get promoted again and since then always played in the highest Soviet or Russian league. The team spent the last season in what was then the International Hockey League in the 1995/96 season , before all non-Russian clubs were banned from the highest Russian league . Thus, the team has been playing in the second-rate Russian Wysschaja League since the 1996/97 season . Due to a regulation that existed until 2007, the non-Russian teams were denied promotion to the first division, the promotion did not succeed. The team was allowed to play in the regular season, but was excluded from the play-offs. During this time in 2001 the name was changed from Torpedo to Kaszink Torpedo .
With the introduction of the Kazakh championship , a total of thirteen championship titles could be celebrated from 1993, making the club the undisputed Kazakh record champions. There are also four cup wins from 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2007.
With victories in the Kazakh championship, Ust-Kamenogorsk took part in the IIHF Continental Cup in 2003/04 , 2004/05 and 2007/08 . In 2003/04 the team failed in the semifinals and the following year the club was eliminated in the third round from further competition. In the 2007/08 season the team was more successful and reached the Super Final, with the team taking third place behind the eventual winner Ak Bars Kazan from Russia and the Latvian representative HK Riga 2000 .
The second team has played in the Kazakh Championship since 2009 .
