The Spreepark Berlin was an amusement park in the north of the Plänterwald in the Berlin district of Treptow-Köpenick . It was opened in 1969 under the name Kulturpark Plänterwald and was the only leisure park in the GDR with around 1.7 million visitors a year . After the political change , the Spreepark was transformed into a leisure park based on the western model in 1991, but had to struggle with economic difficulties, especially from 1999; the number of visitors fell to 400,000 annually. Since the operator's bankruptcy and the closure in 2002, the site has been lying fallow and has been mythicized by popular culture. In 2014 it was repurchased free of charge by the State of Berlin in order to put it back into use.

history

1969–1991 - Plänterwald cultural park

The amusement park was opened in 1969 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the founding of the GDR as the Plänterwald cultural park on an area of 29.5  hectares . The site is in the north of the Plänterwald in close proximity to the Spree . It was the only permanent amusement park in the GDR and, after the political change, the only one in all of Berlin. In contrast to many western parks of this type, which are often designed as a theme park with rides perfectly embedded in the landscape, the design of this theme park was kept simple. A very large part of the facility was taken up by an asphalt surface on which rides and stalls, as they are also known from the hustle and bustle or fair , were permanently set up. There were also park-like, green areas and permanent functional buildings, primarily for restaurants or sanitary facilities. A special attraction was the ferris wheel , which was renewed in 1989 for the 40th birthday and from then on comprised 40 instead of the previous 36 gondolas and was five meters higher than the old one. As a prominent landmark it was in 1998 by Treptowers the Alliance replaced. During the GDR era, up to 1.7 million visitors came every year.

1991–2001 - Spreepark Berlin

The nationally owned enterprise Kulturpark Berlin was wound up in 1991 by the Senate of Berlin . From a total of seven applicants, the Spreepark Berlin GmbH of the showman Norbert Witte was awarded the contract. The Senate Administration hadn't researched his background; In 1981, at the “ Dom ” festival in Hamburg, Witte's telescopic crane collided with the “Skylab” carousel of its neighbor. Seven dead and 20 injured were the result. As a result, German amusement parks repeatedly refused Witte parking spaces until he rented two rides in Berlin's Kulturpark in 1990.

Spreepark Berlin, wild water ride

Under Witte the Spreepark was gradually transformed into a leisure park based on the western model; the attractions of the Mirapolis Park near Paris, which existed only from 1987 to 1991, were taken over. In the meantime, the Spreepark had 1.5 million visitors a year. From now on, a flat-rate admission price (adults 29  marks , children 27 marks) was charged for entry and for all attractions, instead of collecting an individual price at each ride, as was previously the case. The asphalted area around the ferris wheel was broken up and converted into a water landscape. On the 21  hectares used by the park, other attractions such as roller coasters (including one with looping), two wild water rides , a stage for shows, a western village and an English village were built and embedded in the landscape.

In 1997, a leasehold contract was signed between Spreepark GmbH and the State of Berlin . Berlin vouched with a mortgage of 20 million euros for Witte, which was later increased by a further 4.2 million euros. In 1997 the property had a fair value of eight to ten million euros. The property committee of the House of Representatives only approved the controversial contract after a conversation between the CDU politician Volker Liepelt and Witte. In 1999 Spreepark GmbH was a major donor from the Berlin CDU with 51,000 marks .

As of 1999, the park struggled with heavy debts. These can be traced back to an influx of visitors (in the 2001 season there were only 400,000 visitors), which is often justified by the increased flat admission price and the lack of parking spaces.

For the 2001 season, the “Wild River” flume was exchanged for the “Flic-Flac” ride with the Heitmann-Schneider fairground operator from Münster.

In 2001, Spreepark GmbH & Co. KG filed for bankruptcy .

After Norbert Witte's bankruptcy , he tried his hand at a theme park ( "Luna Park") in Peru Lima , where he set up on 18 January 2002 with his family and his closest associates. He shipped the six attractions Baby Flight , Butterfly , Magic Carpet , Fun Express , Jet Star and Spider in 20 shipping containers. He also went bankrupt with this amusement park. On May 19, 2004, he was sentenced to seven years in prison in Germany. He had tried to smuggle 167 kg of cocaine from Peru to Germany in the mast of the magic carpet ride . Witte's son Marcel was sentenced in October 2006 by a Peruvian court to a 20-year prison term for drug smuggling. Norbert Witte has been at large again since May 2008 and was apparently again appointed as administrator of the Spreepark.

The park has not been open to visitors permanently since 2002. In August 2002, it was wound up in bankruptcy proceedings . There remained debts of eleven million euros.

Since then, the site has been neglected. It is guarded around the clock by a security service. Many buildings are in danger of collapsing; The Ferris wheel was no longer commercially available except for a trial shoot on November 7, 2009.

From the beginning of August 2009, interested parties could visit the abandoned Spreepark every weekend during a two-hour guided tour in groups. Christopher Flade's Spreepark homepage and the local security company called for this under the motto 40 years of hype in Plänterwald . Flade also told the story of the park. Due to the great demand, the tours have been held regularly since then and offered until April 2014.

From April 2011 to April 2014, the “Mythos” café was open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and on public holidays and bridge days. The proceeds from the sale went to the repair of old amusement rides that could be renovated. The Santa Fe Express park railway was also successfully reactivated in May 2011 and ran irregularly until April 2014. The proceeds from their operation were also used to repair previous rides. At the summer festival in July 2011, carousels were running again in the park for the first time since it was closed.

In the summer of 2014, the site of the former Spreepark was provided with a new and more stable fence. The rotten wooden bridges around the Ferris wheel were torn down by excavators.

On the night of August 10th to 11th, 2014, there was a large fire in the Spreepark, in which around 100 helpers were on duty on 5000 square meters and, among other things, the backdrop of Old England , which was built in 1999, was destroyed. The burned down buildings have now been torn down. In addition, the station building of the never completed dinosaur ride was affected by the fire, as well as the shooting gallery, the amusement arcade and the dismantled circus tent. The following day the four arsonists were caught, three of whom confessed to the crime. The security measures have now been increased. A few years ago the former lot burned down after an arson attack.

In 2017 and 2018, the arsenic found was removed from the site and parts of the streets were renewed.

Future concepts

Numerous investors have expressed interest in running the park. The French company Grévin & Cie planned to reopen it in 2004. In the three following years, further attractions were to be created based on the model of traditional European family adventure parks. The area of the new park should only be 15 hectares, another four to five hectares should be used for parking spaces. The concept of the all-inclusive price should be abandoned. This project failed because of the plan to include the promenade on the Spree, which had never been part of the Spreepark. The district refused to surrender these areas cheaply, as this would have greatly enhanced the area and tore up the green shoreline between Plänterwald and Treptower Park . Therefore, the site remained part of a large speculative business, as there was neither a de-dedication of the building site nor a need for the property buyer to operate it.

The Danish operator of the Copenhagen amusement park Tivoli also wanted to get involved. At the beginning of October 2005, however, this company withdrew its offer. The reason given was the poor economic situation in Germany. The 23 remaining residents of the former western village within the park area are also a problem.

In December 2006, the future of the Spreepark was still uncertain. According to the Berliner Liegenschaftsfonds, there were no new offers, Deutsche Bank is not waiving its claims and the insolvency proceedings are ongoing. The condition of the rides is also deteriorating and many are only worth scrap .

In January 2007, permaculture students suggested turning the former Plänterwald hype into an educational facility.

In September 2009, plans were announced to create an adventure park that would bring sunken cultures to life. The Liegenschaftsfonds and the Treptow-Köpenick district were positive about the project, but the project failed due to a lack of an investor.

A month later it became known that the previous owner Norbert Witte was planning to revive the Spreepark. By March 2010, the park should be intact to such an extent that a TÜV approval could have taken place. Although some rides were back in operation, the park remained closed.

At the beginning of July 2013, a date was set for a foreclosure auction of the Spreepark. A private investor offered 2.5 million euros, but the auction was surprisingly canceled by Senator for Finance Ulrich Nussbaum . According to media reports, they wanted to prevent a company that was founded specifically for the purchase of the site from being awarded the contract.

A potential investor was quoted in Tagesspiegel at the beginning of 2014 with the assumption that Berlin was planning to build apartments on the park area, which the district denied.

In February 2014, the State of Berlin acquired the leasehold on the Spreepark from the insolvent Spreepark GmbH and thus has access to the property free of encumbrances and liabilities. The state-owned Grün Berlin GmbH took over the abandoned Berlin Spreepark in Plänterwald on January 1, 2016. The aim is to develop an environmentally friendly and touristic attractive cultural and leisure park on the Spreepark area that is appropriate for the sensitive sub-area. The aim is to create a new type of public park in which art, culture and nature are gently united. At the same time, usable attractions such as the Ferris wheel, the park railway and the 360-degree cinema are to be put back into operation. The framework planning for this was presented to the public in mid-2018. Construction work is scheduled to begin in 2020, the opening is to take place gradually - starting in 2021 with the egg house.

The egg house , which is in dire need of renovation , is included in the new development plan .

The Spreepark can be visited with guided tours. In addition, the Spreepark was opened to the public for a weekend at irregular intervals. In addition, the State of Berlin is currently leasing the Spreepark for filming and smaller events.

Artistic reception

The television series Spuk unterm Riesenrad of GDR television , broadcast in 1979, chose the Ferris wheel of the Kulturpark as its starting point and took up the advertising slogan "Fun under the Riesenrad". The great success of the series brought a subsequent feature film and other spin-offs . In summer 2012 and 2013, the theater production Spuk unterm Riesenrad was shown in the park as an adaptation of the series.

The history of the park is dealt with by two documentary films, Kulturpark by Immanuel Weinland (2004) and roller coaster by Peter Dörfler (2008), which was part of the program of the 59th Berlinale .

In 2006 the Neukölln Opera performed the stories from the Plänterwald .

The Spreepark was also used as a location for the following productions:
