L-Mag is a magazine aimed at the target group of lesbian women. The German-language print magazine for lesbians appears in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg every two months with a print run of 15,000 copies. L-Mag is now available at over 2,000 sales outlets (such as train station bookstores, selected newsagents and L-Spots close to the community) and can be obtained by subscription or as an e-paper .

The magazine is published by the publishing house Special Media SDL , which also publishes Berlin's largest-circulation queer city magazine, Siegessäule . Editor-in-chief and co-founder has been Manuela Kay from the start .

history

L-MAG goes back to the idea of the publisher Reiner Jackwerth. In 2002, he asked the then editor-in-chief of SIEGESSÄULE , Manuela Kay: "What do lesbians who do not live in Berlin read?" And then asked: "Ms. Kay, think of something." The 2003 CSD season was the first 40,000 copies with the title: “What lesbians really want” at the CSD Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt a. M. and Stuttgart distributed. “And then in the summer of 2003 we made the incredible tour on six weekends in a row to six German CSDs between Hamburg and Munich, ” reports editor-in-chief Manuela Kay looking back, “very close to the future reader, who was a skeptical CSD visitor at the time, and us didn't quite trust the way: A magazine for lesbians? That seemed new and dubious for many. ”Prominent interview partners of the first issue were Ulrike Folkers , Katharina Franck , Tegan & Sara and porn star Dolly Buster in the“ Unexpected Interview ”.

Initially, L-MAG was published by Jackwerth Verlag as a free quarterly magazine in A5 format, parallel to Lespress , which was still published nationwide at the time and which, unlike L-MAG, was never available in the usual magazine stores. In addition, L-MAG was initially created by the Siegessäule team.

From January 2005 L-MAG went on sale with 30,000 copies in pocket format and with the slogan “Lesbians kiss better”. Since then, the magazine has been published every two months and initially cost € 2.90. This was the first time that a lesbian magazine was available again in newsagents since the girlfriend was banned in 1933 .

After a year in pocket format, L-MAG switched to A4 format in 2006 . At that time there were already over 3,000 subscribers.

At the beginning of 2008, DFB President Theo Zwanziger gave L-MAG an interview on the subject of homosexuality and professional football as the first medium ever . Gudrun Fertig conducted the interview .

In 2009 the layout was completely relaunched . The result was, among other things, a new logo that is still in place today.

After the dissolution of the Jackwerth Verlag, due to the professional retirement of the publisher Reiner Jackwerth, L-Mag was taken over in May 2012 with parts of the former media inventory of the publisher in the newly founded publishing house Special Media SDL , with the L-MAG editor-in-chief Manuela Kay and Gudrun Fertig, to date editor-in-chief of the publisher's online presence, will act as managing partners.

Print

L-MAG is the first magazine for lesbians after the Nazi era that can be regularly purchased in magazine stores. L-MAG sees itself as a journalistic magazine in the tradition of the lesbian magazines of the 1920s in Germany, such as Die Freund and Garconne . Internationally, L-MAG is in line with Curve from the USA and DIVA from Great Britain .

The focus of L-MAG in the print area is on the presentation of the different worlds of lesbian women and a self-confident and self-confident approach to the issue of being lesbian. L-MAG counters the practically non-existent media and social presence of lesbian women with their visibility and social participation. Typical women's magazine topics such as fashion and diets are deliberately avoided. Instead, strong, successful lesbian women are portrayed and lesbian culture is presented nationally and internationally.

L-MAG counters the feeling of many lesbians that they are more or less alone in the world with many portraits, conversations, photos and news, with the diversity and ubiquity of lesbians. The desire for clear lesbian role models, role models and pioneers takes place in L-MAG in the form of portraits and interviews as well as many photo series.

L-MAG interviewed and portrayed such well-known and exemplary lesbians as: model and actress Ruby Rose , rock star Melissa Etheridge , singer kd lang , front woman of the band Skunk Anansie Skin , the actors and creators of the series The L Word , the two actresses of Character Lisbeth Salander : Rooney Mara and Noomi Rapace , soccer players like Nadine Angerer , Nilla Fischer or Ramona Bachmann , TV presenters Bettina Böttinger and Dunja Hayali , feminist Laurie Penny , supermodel Jenny Shimizu , pop star Beth Ditto , actresses Ulrike Folkerts and Maren Kroymann , various Politicians or unexpected non-lesbian interview partners like: Dolly Buster , Wolfgang Petry or “ Bond Girl” Lea Seydoux .

The regular sections of the print issue are international reports on lesbians all over the world, politics, sex , gossip, horoscopes , music , sports , film , books , as well as a different focus topic in each issue such as: family , social media , freedom , friendship , romance , Europe , art , bisexuality .

On-line

Right from the start, L-Mag had an extensive online presence with news and additional lesbian-related services such as "L-Dating", "L-Appointments" and the regular "KWord" section with lesbian gossip. In September 2009 a new L-MAG website was launched as a lesbian internet portal. The website has also had a mobile version since June 2016 . With over 120,000 page impressions per month (122,164 November 2015 according to IVW ).

Actions and campaigns

  • At the start of sales in 2005 there was a campaign “Lesbians kiss better” to match the cover . This should set an example for lesbian visibility and call for a confident appearance of lesbians.
  • The “L campaign” with the slogan “L for openly lesbian” has been in the magazine since January / February 2005. The campaign consists of a photo for which well-known personalities can be shown in each issue with one hand shaped into an L in order to openly, confidently or in solidarity stand up for lesbian visibility. The first were actress Maren Kroymann with her then girlfriend Claudia Müller. Meanwhile, greats such as musicians Melissa Etheridge , Beth Dito , Heather Peace , Peaches , Amanda Palmer , philosopher Judith Buttler , the bands Betty, Rosenstolz , comedians Georg Uecker and Olivia Jones , Dirk Bach , actresses Jasmin Tabatabai and Romy Haag , TV- Moderator Bettina Böttinger and soccer player Nilla Fischer poses for lesbian visibility. The gesture has become an established and popular sign within the LGBT community.
  • From May / June 2005 L-MAG fought for the successful lesbian TV series The L-Word to be broadcast on German television after it had already been received in 17 countries . For this purpose, six employees of the publishing house were photographed naked with the slogan “ L-MAG will the L-Word”, based on a poster from the series. Postcards with this motif were distributed and the readers were asked to sign and send them to the editorial team as a request to Pro7 . A total of 2,000 postcards with the motif and e-mails were finally handed over to Pro7 in Munich . At the same time, the broadcaster announced that it had bought the rights to The L-Word . From May 30, 2006 the series ran on Pro7 .
  • In 2008 L-MAG started the campaign “Germany is becoming lesbian” for the CSD season. The stickers “Germany is becoming lesbian” were distributed on almost all CSD's. Readers were asked to take pictures of themselves with stickers and the L gesture (like the "L campaign").
  • From 2012 to 2013 L-MAG collected donations for the Ugandan lesbian organization FARUG (Freedom and Roam Uganda). From November 2012, a charity shirt was created by the German eco-label Cantana under the motto “Marching for those who can't” . The design of the shirt was the shape of a woman who forms an L with her hand. Of the sales price of 15 euros, 5 euros were donated to FARUG. The campaign for FARUG raised a total of 1,500 euros. In addition, 600 euros in donations were collected for the Serbian lesbian organization Labris.
  • In April 2016, L-MAG joined the Berlin initiative “Berlin needs us!” Together with the queer Berlin city magazine SIEGESSÄULE, which is also published by Special Media SDL . Don't agree with the blues and browns ”. The campaign initiated by the BAH (Berliner Aidshilfe) is an amalgamation of queer initiatives, media, institutions and self-help groups. Under the motto “ Ass up! The choice is yours. ” The alliance took an active position against the AfD and NPD parties .

Events

  • From 2007 to 2012, L-MAG organized the "L-Filmnacht" in cooperation with the gay and lesbian film distributor Edition Salzgeber and the cinema chain Cinemaxx , during which lesbian films in the Cinemaxx cinemas once a month, initially in five and up to 20 cities, were shown.
  • In March 2015, L-MAG organized the panel discussion “The invisible lesbian - On the disappearance of an identity” together with SIEGESSÄULE, followed by the Precious Pearls party and the “Lesbian Fighting Lounge” in Berlin's SchwuZ . In September 2016 there was a follow-up event Dyke * Out - good news for bad grrrlz * with the panel discussion “Good lesbian - bad lesbian”.

Awards

In 2010, the title series of the May / June 2009 issue of the European elections “Paradise Europe?” Was awarded the European Parliament's journalists' prize in the “print” category.

Social Commitment

For the 10th anniversary, L-MAG initiated and organized the Dyke * March Berlin in 2013. Since then, on the eve of the CSD, lesbians have been roaming the streets of Berlin under the motto “Lesbian visibility and joie de vivre”. L-MAG thus triggered a new movement for lesbian visibility in Germany, followed by Cologne (2015), Hamburg (2016) and Heidelberg (2017) with their own Dyke March.

Others

For the exhibition “Homosexuality_en” (2015), some early editions of L-MAG were exhibited under the title “Gegenubliclichkeit” in the DHM (German Historical Museum).
