Laikipia County (until 2010 Laikipia District ) is a county in central Kenya . The county's capital is Nanyuki . In 2019, the county lived 518,560 people on 8,696.1 km². Laikipia is located northwest of Mount Kenya , about 1700-2000 m above sea level, in the central Kenyan highlands. The people live from raising cattle (cattle, goats and sheep), often as nomads , and from growing maize, grain and vegetables. Laikipia has suffered multiple periods of drought since the mid-1990s, which have exacerbated the poverty of the people living there. Due to these periods of drought, many people settled in the few fertile places. The existing natural resources are very stressed, especially since there is hardly any sustainable agriculture.
The county has the greatest biodiversity in terms of mammals in Kenya.
There were 302 primary and 87 secondary schools in the county in 2009 . Since 1974 the military base of the Kenya Air Force has been located in the county capital Nanyuki.
