interior

The Lancia Thema presented in March 2011 was an upper middle class four-door sedan. The vehicle was manufactured by the American automobile manufacturer Chrysler and marketed in Europe as Lancia . It is almost identical to the Chrysler 300 of the second series .

It replaced both the previous Chrysler 300 and the Lancia Thesis , which were separate models and were offered side by side , on the continental European market . The market launch took place on November 12, 2011.

In October 2014, production of the theme was discontinued after only three years. The reasons for this are the low sales figures and the withdrawal of the Lancia brand from various European markets.

Model history

After Lancia's parent company Fiat had acquired a total of 20 percent of the shares in Chrysler in June 2009, Fiat's CEO Sergio Marchionne developed a concept to standardize the production lines of both companies. This included the decision to merge the Chrysler and Lancia brands. Since then, both brands have been working together and developing a joint portfolio that takes previous developments into account.

The distribution of the joint vehicles is geographically divided: Chrysler handles sales in the English-speaking countries, including Great Britain and Ireland, while the company's models are sold under the Lancia brand in the remaining countries, especially in Europe.

Since then, Lancia's model range has not only included the small cars developed and built in Italy such as the Ypsilon and Musa as well as the compact Delta car , but also again large sedans and vans contributed by Chrysler. The Lancia Thema is accordingly a European version of the current Chrysler 300, which is no longer offered on the continental European market under this name.

Marchionne's concept of the merger of Lancia and Chrysler has been panned many times in the press. Numerous reports pointed to the very different traditions of the two brands and the equally different social milieus of previous buyers of the two brands, right up to the designation as "pizza with ketchup". The FAZ, on the other hand, describes the topic as an “insider tip for connoisseurs” and praises the “presidential presence and dignified arrogance”.

The Scuderia Ferrari used the diesel version of the theme as a company car, including Fernando Alonso.

design

When rebadging the appearance is alienated a product to offer it under different brands. Therefore, the Chrysler and Lancia models look very similar. The design of the Lancia Thema follows the tradition of the first generation of the Chrysler 300 produced from 2004 to 2011. Like this, the Thema also has a high belt line with a roof structure that looks comparatively low. The roof structure and the overall proportions of the car essentially correspond to the previous Chrysler 300. The front section with the large radiator grille also takes up the established Chrysler design. The radiator grille bears the Lancia logo, but not the vertical dividing strut that has been common up to now. Instead, as in the USA version, the decorative struts run horizontally. The slightly suggested tail fins drawn towards the rear lights, on the other hand, can be understood as a quote from the Lancia Kappa Coupé or the classic Flaminia Coupé Pininfarina .

technology

The engines of the Lancia Thema differ from those of the Chrysler 300 intended for the North American market. Lancia offers two 3.0 liter diesel engines with 140 kW (190 hp) or 176 kW (239 hp). The diesel engines were designed by VM Motori in Italy. The top-of-the-range engine is a 3.6 liter six-cylinder petrol engine that develops 210 kW (286 hp). The up to 6.4 liter eight-cylinder engines with which vehicles for the North American market are equipped are not available in the Lancia Thema.

In the case of diesel engines, the power is transmitted by a five-speed automatic system, whereas an eight-speed automatic system is used for the Otto engine. The topic with diesel engines is only available with rear-wheel drive, the gasoline engine as rear-wheel and all-wheel drive.

Furnishing

When the model was launched in November 2011, Lancia offered the three equipment levels Gold, Platinum and Executive. The standard equipment of the topic is extensive. It includes leather upholstery, an infotainment system with touchscreen, xenon headlights, a keyless driver authorization system and a reversing camera.

The American sister model has a much simpler standard equipment in the basic versions.
