The men's javelin at the 1966 European Athletics Championships was held on September 1 and 2, 1966 in Budapest's Népstadion .

European champion was the Soviet defending champion and Olympic bronze medalist from 1964 Jānis Lūsis . He won ahead of Poland's Władysław Nikiciuk. Bronze went to the Hungarian Olympic runner-up from 1964 Gergely Kulcsár .

Record improvements

European champion Jānis Lūsis improved the existing EM record in the final on September 1st by 2.44 m to 84.48 m. Soviet Union 1955Soviet Union 

qualification

The 23 participants took part in a joint qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 76.00 m. Since only ten athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next two best placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 74.88 m was enough for the final.
