The javelin throw of women in the 1978 European Athletics Championships was on 31 August and 1 September 1978 at the Stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.

With gold and bronze, there were two medals in this competition for the athletes from the GDR. The European champion was the defending champion and two-time Olympic champion in 1972 and 1976, Ruth Fuchs , who improved her own European record by four centimeters with her winning throw. She won ahead of the British Tessa Sanderson . Bronze went to Ute Hommola .

Record improvement

European champion Ruth Fuchs improved her own championship record in the final on September 1st by 1.94 m to 69.16 m. At the same time, with this litter, she increased the European record she also held by four centimeters. Germany Democratic Republic 1949GDR
