The women's hammer throw at the 1998 European Athletics Championships was held on August 21 and 22, 1998 in the Népstadion in the Hungarian capital, Budapest .
The competition was part of a major international championship for the first time. With 35 female throwers, the number of participants was astonishingly high for the young new discipline.
The Romanian world record holder Mihaela Melinte became European champion . She won ahead of the Russian Olga Kusenkowa . Bronze went to the German Kirsten Münchow .

- The following EM records were set at the end of the competitions in the respective qualifying groups on August 21:
- 64.10 m - Olga Kusenkowa , qualification group A.
- 68.65 m - Mihaela Melinte , qualification group B
- 64.10 m - Olga Kusenkowa , qualification group A.
- In the final on August 22nd, Mihaela Melinte set a new four-year European Championship record with 71.17 m .
qualification
August 21, 1998
35 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 61.50 m. Nine athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the three next placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 59.15 m had to be achieved for the final.
